Thread regarding 3M layoffs

Leaving 3M after only 3 years

I am so happy to be getting out after only 3 years. A lot of the people I work with are angry, rude, and leadership could care less about me as a human. I know everything is not brighter outside of 3M but I am quitting for my mental health. I can’t wait to feel like myself again. I can’t take anymore of the weekly layoffs. I feel so free and my mental health needs this to survive.

I agree with you, I am out and doing so much better mentally and physically. People and organisations are so much more respectful outside, then the way 3M is dealing with its employees since last many years. Very toxic environment guys , we will live only once, so measure and take your options. We are/was just a number to 3M now… and not valued contributors. Value your uniqueness !

Gone after over 15 here. Left 3M looking for greener pastures and I found them. It is so much nicer working for a business that is competently run.

I encourage everyone left in 3M to actively look. I know 3M might seem the safe choice but I didn't realize just how toxic it had become until I was somewhere else.

To the Lean Engineer, posted by “ ThanksToTireman” - how did you get 30 weeks of severance? I thought there was a standard with a maximum if 26 weeks???

Referencing the post below..............I would argue more of a resemblence to the Detroit Lions instead of the Cleveland Browns. lol.

I am gone mid-January. Took a 40k pay increase, RSUs that are actually worth something, and a big sign-on bonus. For those that choose to stay, I really hope the leadership at the top is replaced. How many times does MR have to say we will keep executing the playbook? You mean the playbook that eroded 3Ms competitive advantage, allowed faulty products into the marketplace, and allows employees to sit on their can while getting paid top dollar? Ok - 3M is becoming the Cleveland Browns of the corporate world.

No regrets! Definitely do not commit to any corporation and spend 20+ yrs working for them (probably impossible nowadays). Employee/employer is like a poker game. We both cheat, and the better one wins (applies to all levels of employment. Good Luck!

As I was exposed to more “leaders” at 3M, some of the most memorable coaching tips included “you’ve got to learn how to take more credit for your teams work”, “if your team doesn’t fear you, they won’t respect you”, “marketers are what matter, everyone else is staff”, and my fave “EMEA get’s more done because Americans demand respect.”

I have no idea what that last one meant, but the person (SIBG Mktg Tyrant from Pole) who said it is disliked by virtually everyone in EMEA, and anyone below her here.

This place used to have HBR papers written about 3M’s innovation and culture, and taught to MBA students. Now, it’s better suited for a criminal psychology study.

I am a Lean engineer and my last day will be on 30 Dec. Leaving this place after 10 years of contributions, but I guess there’s not much feeling after being told that I will be retrenched. Did receive a decent payout of 30 weeks of severance pay.

The vast majority of people are still good and reliable employees and nice to work with. Something seems to happen when people get promoted to LG15 and higher. It's like donald Sutherland and the invasion of the body snatchers.

Too bad you didn't get to see this company before GE guy mcnerney destroyed the culture. Mike is just plain incompetent. Monish from GE is really the worst.

My last straw working at 3M as a young employee was getting screamed at in a conference room by a tenured employee who was supposed to be training me in my new role. I didn't know how to get to a certain screen in COMS (you know, the green screen system from the 70s). I was berated and screamed at for not having the same knowledge of 3M's antiquated technology as someone who was there for 30 years. I borderline have PTSD from that experience. Thankfully, not every company is like that, and I am treated with respect as a human being now.

Well done! I salute 🫡 your courageous decision. Life is too short to continue working at a firm which has repeatedly demonstrated a wanton disregard for their employees.

Roman, Patolawala, and Rhodes are a national disgrace!
