Face the reality - the oil industry is in reduce mode which means smaller budgets and less employees. This downsizing will continue for a while and no one is safe, so don't be too smug and confident. If your BU, project or budget gets the big axe, then you will more likely be out the door.

@1cgu, Well, I went through that many layoffs and reorgs (I can't even count, since pre-Gulf) and also got pay raises and big bonuses most of the time, and am not management. Left with a smile and no regrets. Not many places can match the pay and benefits, unless you are a sub-par performer or not well-liked. Now not being "well-liked" being a detriment to your promotions is universal. Has nothing, absolutely NOTHING to do with Chevron in particular. Welcome to the real world. The people who claim otherwise are living in a bubble.

Was in Chevron for 25 years, 1983-2008.

Retired in 2008 and did much better outside of Chevron.

Went through 12 “reorgs”/layoffs/right-sizings/down-sizings/... at Chevron. The one thing guaranteed is that CVX management will end up giving themselves nice pay raises, bigger bonuses and LTI enhancements for having to “manage through such hard times.”
What an undeserving lot of charlatans! The Chevron Way and the Golden Rule are the same: Those with the gold make the rules.

This is obviously very different than 2015. It is influenced by a variety of different factors. The staff reductions were already in play/anticipated prior to the downturn in the economy precipitated by the CV outbreak. Based on previous outbreaks, (H1N1, SARS, Ebola, AIDs) the economic effects will be short lived. The staff reductions will still be in play. CVX will not want to shed any more than absolutely necessary to prevent having to restaff quickly when the economy stabilizes.

What do you mean incompetence? It’s precisely that which may save your job. Now, if you are very competent in your job, but are 55+ and a white male, well that may just get you laid off this time around. Only at Chevron.

Incompetence? You mean Chevron hires incompetent people? All of those thousands who were laid off in 2015 and early 2016 were ALL incompetent? Everyone except you, of course. There are people who post here who are in total denial about the state of the oil industry, of Chevron and of their particular job. The only safe people are in HR.

Apparently the OP is afraid that he will be getting laid off due to his obvious incompetence and is trying to project onto others with much more secure positions to share his misery, as misery loves company. No one is buying this load of BS that he is trying to dish out. Poor little guy!

Embrace change and not be fearful of it. I was laid off, enrolled into law school, graduating next year before taking a Master’s LLM. A new direction; a new beginning; a positive outlook. The oil field is on the rocks and finished for most. Those who adapt survive. Those who hope to cling on face continual dogfights before AI kicks them onto the sc-ap heap.
