Summer hours. Medtronic employees begged for summer hours and leadership consistently denied summer hours, until Medtronic purchased Covidien and Covidien had summer hours. Rather than take summer hours away from covidien employees, MDT expanded summer hours to eligible USA employees. This was way back in 2016.
“Sunsetting summer hours” is terrible corporate doublespeak. MDT will not get more
Productivity by sunsetting summer hours.
It is quite depressing watching the demise of
MDT due to atrocious leadership.
Don’t let our “leaders” turn us on each other. We didn’t ship jobs overseas, take away summer hours, 2% raises, end of year evaluations with no explanation as to how you will be judged, etc. They did this so they can get their GIANT bonuses and fly around on private planes. Going after each other is textbook decide and conquer.
That's too reasonable a take, their priorities are giving away 87% of the money to shareholders rather than investing in innovation for patients and their employees. Then they wonder why they are failing. This pattern has been very clear for at least couple years now.
Successful companies are offering 4 day work weeks and are still profitable, with happier employees (especially working moms/parents). Medtronic has made a strategic choice not to invest in internal systems that make getting things done easier. We are still working in spreadsheets, manually validating data that could and should be done by an automated system. Investing in infrastructure to make things easier would result in needing to hire less employees and improving morale.
Working from home is basically summer hours all year long, what a joke.
lol I dare anyone tell me to not take half day Fridays after I've already hit 40 hours before Friday even starts on most weeks.
Some observations. If we are going to make things equitable, how about OT for the exempt employees.
Next point: it’s a poor assumption that if you work remote you are not trying. Tell that to me on one of my 60 hour weeks. It’s up to managers to manage their people and they do a poor job of it.
Final point: I wish layoffs were only about clearing out the dead weight. I call BS on that. It’s to clear out the older employees to save money…leaving the dead weight and less than dedicated behind
If you read the fine print in the PDF , managers are not advised to come up with Summer hours options for their onsite/flex employees , WTH does that even mean??? Flex worker won't care they will be gone after 12pm Friday anyways. Friday is a ghost town on most campuses already.
The PTO option is a joke. IMHO
IDK what else to say about it.
This company is no longer a US company. This company doesn't care about Americans. All this company care about is their shareholders.
The goal is to gut the U.S. workforce and pay as little severance as possible so they have to make MDT an unpleasant place to work. Pretty obvious that’s what they are doing.
I love how they defend the change by suggesting the work anywhere model when only hybrid employees can participate in that.....
A win for equity would have been to give *everyone access to summer hours. I keep hearing some roles “can’t” have that option which is BS. Don’t tell me with all the innovations this company has made, we can’t figure out how to streamline shifts.
I wholeheartedly agree that ending summer hours is a great win for equity. There are so many employees that were unable to take advantage of summer hours and were excluded from this benefit.

wait what I'm not suppose be posting comments from my cube?
Medtronic lost most of its talent over the past 3-5 years. Can’t win without talent. Things would be different if all the smart people hadn’t left…
Can’t wait to see the list of IP addresses from the babies posting here!
Rumor is this is so employees will be in the office on Fridays for the big layoffs that are coming this summer. Hearing it’s finally reached the point where the company has no choice but to rapidly pull back.
Instead of "sunsetting summer hours" can we please sunset Excom?
*** there’s a lot of shareholders in here who don’t like losing money because of lazy employees.
👇 this person is clueless.
dang there is a lot of bootlickers and snowflakes afraid of "wokeness" in here, just remember that the billionaires don't give a sh*t about you either babes. I just assume if you loooove working so much it is because you don't have any friends outside of work.
Also, this will not "improve productivity" if anything it will make it worse. Idk why everyone ignores study after study that shows employees who feel respected by their workplace and have a healthy work life balance are more productive.
Didn’t Omar tell us if we hit all those quotas for female, minority and LGBTQ employees in leadership positions (40% director and above) we’d be a much better company??? WTF Omar! He might be even worse than Jeff Martha. I was all for it until it started costing me $$$$$.
All of you people pushing “work harder” and talking about BSX/Boston growing better realize that Boston has summer hours right? Keeping people happy and providing flexibility in how people work retains talent and can incentivize good people to stick around and contribute to their best ability. Productivity and engagement don’t happen just because you’re in front of your computer.
Tired of the negative people slamming Medtronic employees. Most of us put in our 40 hours a week if you factor in ERG time and lunch. You can’t really expect a lot more from people honestly. They act like we should be grateful for these jobs. Trust me, sending emails isn’t as easy as it looks.
Lol @ everyone here. Do you want your CEO to lie about your performance? Should he pretend like $50B in valuation hasn’t been destroyed since Covid? It’s stunning leadership hasn’t done more to whip employees into shape. 20k+ in layoffs would be a good start. Then the worst employees can take full time summer hours! 😎
Worst part this new sunsetting is it also effects the OPS folks onsite 5 days a week in our MFG plants. Terrible it sacross the board, not direct to the corporate yahoos are on flex schedules. Oh you can still take 30 days from any where, tell that to OPS folks MDT
Imagine you’re the New York Yankees, you are 20-76 and in last place and your coach wants you to practice every day and you complain about it not realizing you’re going to get cut for underperformance in like 2 months. THAT is Medtronic employees. What do you expect when you can’t make a number to save your life? You’re just lucky to have jobs at this point!
Medtronic never should have implemented all these programs that scream “Medtronic is the place to work if you don’t actually want to work” in the first place. Productivity per employee is pathetic - BSX has less than half the employees and higher market cap. Medtronic employees are in for a rude awakening if they think this is the worst thing that’s going to happen…
It has come to my attention that Medtronic is ending the Summer Hours program that gave employees flexibility to take Friday afternoons off in the summer. I fully applaud this - Summer Hours was always a repressive and racist program geared at favoring rich, white employee with cabins and vacation homes over blue collar and factory workers. Eliminating this program is a win for equity and will go down as a key DEI achievement for Medtronic!
Well another reason to leave, good thing I'm interviewing.
Sure, they can take it away but let's be honest no one is going to work Friday afternoons anyways.
Bohoo crybabies. Cry me a river.
We need to work hard , do more with less and be grateful to have a job and insurance right now.
Boston, Edward, Abbott are all growing 10% . we need to stop being whiny and meet our goals and stop freeloading
lol yep @@1roz+1sjOMXaV, i love that they clearly googled "how can we say 'we are CANCELING a long standing benefit' but not use the word cancel"? Hmmm lets go with "sunsetting" that sounds nice
it is so enraging that the reason they are giving is that "not everyone can take advantage of this benefit so we are taking it away from everyone." Ok let us expand this logic a little further! VPs, will you be flying in coach then? Or not flying at all since most of us are not even allowed to travel? Will we all be allowed to use the private jet? Will we all be getting c-suite stock packages? No?? well you see how it works that sometimes not EVERY SINGLE PERSON can have the same benefit but that doesn't mean you have to take it away.
Like, just be honest and say it is because of share holder value or some sh*t. We didnt even get an email from our org, just found the doc on sharepoint. Cowardly. It's literally already may, guess they had to wait for the abysmal OHS survey results to come out before they did this. Our org had record low trust in leadership, like ~50%. And only 22% of people said they were happy with compensation. This should help!
Just got the email from our management about it too. "Sunsetting Summer Hours". Good lord I hate corporate speak.
It’s true. There’s an FAQ published on Sharepoint which says No more summer hours in 2024.
Look for the memo on sharepoint ‘2024_SunsettingSummerHours_EmployeeFAQs’
"In Hyderabad, you get a sh-t ton of holidays and vacation time compared to Americans"
No we don't. We also make less than half than you make
People are sick and tired of our poor management leading us nowhere, so we can't announce our reorgs any longer. What else can we do to pi-s people off!?!? Wait, I got it......
Just google summer hours on main page. It’s true, that is no longer a benefit. Glad I left.
In Hyderabad, you get a sh-t ton of holidays and vacation time compared to Americans
Well in Hyberbad, we don't get summer hours. I don't get why Americans cry so much about working less.
