Thread regarding Ford layoffs

I was let go on July5th and will get 8 months package, unemployment?

Right after I returned from vacation, my job is gone. I will get 8 months severance, but can I file for unemployment immediately? I am in Michigan. A poster here said, I can. So, I want to know what is the right way to go about it.

Call UIA and ask them. Don't waste your time here.
Likely you have to wait until after you receive the severance, not the number of months.

You cannot collect both unemployment and severance pay simultaneously. If you look outside the auto industry, you'll probably have a job before long.

File right away.

“… you’ll probably find another job before your severance period ends.”

Don’t count on it!

I had 30 years in and got 9 months' severance.
So yeah, Ford is cheap.

My severance package included language saying Ford would contest any unemployment claim that was filed before the severance period ended. If you received 8 months severance you’ll probably find another job before your severance period ends.

I know for sure. You cannot collect unemployment until your severance period ends. Ford will fight it.

Not sure of the legality of when to file, but you do have the legal right to file as long as you don’t work in the meantime. I think Ford protests any such request until after the severance period runs out….think I read that in the severance paperwork

Just call Michigan Unemployment office and ask.

Not sure about Michigan but the majority of other states do not count severance as pay, it is just part of your last paycheck, same as a bonus. If on the other hand your package is paid out as a paycheck each pay period, then it might be considered the same as a regular paycheck.

Ford will protest if you try to claim unemployment before your severance period runs out. If you get 8 months severance, you will have to wait 8 months before you claim unemployment.

I was let go last week. I'm getting 7 months (which I am grateful for). So far as I know, I cannot apply for/get unemployment until 7 months has passed whether I get a lump sum severance or monthly. However - I have not yet verified this, and will post my findings here soon. Meanwhile - Anyone else know for sure ? Here's another one I am looking into: If I get a new job in a few weeks, but then get fired from that, would my unemployment be based on my new job pay ?

How long were you employed?
