Thread regarding IBM layoffs

Older employees are in most danger of being laid off

I'm sure some younger folks will also receive their walking papers but that'll be done mostly to cover their behinds in case of another age discrimination suit. Other than that, this is just a continuation of a systemic removal of anybody who is either near or has already stepped into Rule 70 (used to be 75.) This is IBM's modus operandi, after all.

AGREE, but along with younger folks since IBM pays attention to Age Discrimination...

So heads up young people... IBM is not really your friend!

"No business that is smart makes decisions to layoff people purely based on age."

You may be right. But faced with the overwhelming evidence that IBM is NOT smart, what's your point?

@1aau+18UZrlph sounds oddly familiar to the words of a certain HR exec I know...

IBM has lost three major class action lawsuits on age discrimination in the last decade. ProPublica, a news research consortium led by the New York Times released an approximate 50 page report several years ago detailing age discrimination in layoffs at IBM.

Anyone saying there is no proof of this is misinformed, and should do a little research. It's easy to find.

If you think there is no age discrimination at IBM you should read this

I don't agree with these comment. We should assume that there is age discrimination, because someone suggests it is so and is IBM's modus operandi. What is the basis for such comments. No business that is smart makes decisions to layoff people purely based on age. They make decisions based to the level of contribution of the individual, and maybe also take into consideration the pay and therefore look to hold onto those people who provide the best value. This in my view is a fair & reasonable approach and is the basis of free enterprise.

As for the person who commented and said that IBM is a "toxic" place to work. My experience has been the exact opposite. And if it was so toxic, why did he continue to work at IBM. No one was holding a gun to his head forcing him to work her. Sounds like he should have left IBM sooner if he felt that way.
