Thread regarding VF Corp. layoffs

THE NORTH FACE

After nine years of dedication, I was laid off, so it’s time to shed light on what’s really going on.

Caroline, are you aware of what’s happening under your leadership? The executive team is fragmented and struggles to align on basic operational and strategic direction - a challenge that’s visibly impacting the brand. The culture, particularly among the senior male leaders from Europe, is problematic and hostile. They frequently speak down to women that are more junior employees, while they contribute very little value by way of support or communication. The work environment is toxic and hostile, with specific individuals like RG (Global Planning) and TD (AMER) gaining reputations for behavior that undermines morale.

In APAC, the regional merchandising leader FH has been observed making inappropriate comments that question the intelligence of colleagues. These behaviors go unchecked in a culture where teams are stretched to their limits. Across functions, flags are raised for risk to business and morale constantly, yet no one appears to be taking anything seriously.

Operations could be a stabilizing force, but it’s clear from conversations with that team that they’re exhausted, under-supported, and seriously demoralized. I’ve seen tears, more than once, and their resilience is nothing short of remarkable given the situations they’ve been put in. Their treatment is deeply concerning, and some are questioning if it’s because it’s a team of women. It’s hard to imagine they’re not already planning their exits, which would be unfortunate during a time where the teams are already metabolizing significant change and need operations to support business continuity.

This extends beyond just one team. Promotions are stalled across multiple functions. People are openly seeking new roles. The only individuals who seem to succeed in this environment are those who stay quiet and compliant, a dynamic that doesn’t foster innovation or loyalty.

This company seems to have forgotten that people are its most valuable asset. You can’t mistreat them and expect retention, performance, or brand success. Caroline has an incredible background. I’d appreciate seeing her more present in holding her teams accountable.

@4sa agree. Her silence is very telling in the face of phase 2. We have to settle for BD and BH’s weekly updates where they show up looking like they’re coming off a bender, laughing, joking, and being all around tone deaf AF. She needs to step TF up

@4s9 interesting. Could you elaborate? It’s hard to believe there was ever a time where leaders truly led and supported teams, and made decisions.

I am not sure the current president has the chops to turn the brand toward a better place. I imagine she is gone in a year.

Leadership these days at TNF is awful. Simply awful. Not too long ago they had great leaders like AA, MF, SM, ML, SC among others who actually led the brand. Now it is a toxic gong show.

@18m

Good to know, the job position I see sounds interesting, but layoffs do worry me. Guess it’s worth taking the risk for a career that better aligns with what I want

@18g I second this. VF is pushing changes down without a full understanding of how the brands operate or what the teams need. But overall, less chaotic to work at that level than within a brand.

@xr If you don’t already have a job and you’re interviewing at VF, I’d say go for it. I’ve been at multiple brands and they all have similar issues, but the European attitudes and misogyny are unique to TNF. So just go into VF with realistic expectations and don’t hype it up as your dream job. My only real warning would be not to relocate to work for VF considering the frequency of layoffs.

@xr corporate is at a similar level of dysfunction but less chaotic than the brand level. Although most of the brands don’t like corporate very much rn due to changes made to standardize across brands.

Wild how accurate this is. If you know RG, you know.

Is this specific to TNF or VF corp in general? ate there any pros to working there? Asking as someone who’s interested in some corporate roles at VF Corp

Forgot to mention. Don’t ever take complaints to HR at TNF. They shrug off European behavior as “just direct” and multiple people have been retaliated against and fired as a result of reporting incidents such as being yelled at by a senior leader.
