Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

I've worked in a lot of places but I've never felt fear like this

It's in the air. You see it in how people walk, how they talk, how they avoid eye contact with certain managers. Everyone is afraid. Afraid of being next. Afraid of speaking up. Afraid of a bad review that could lead to a PIP that could lead to being walked out. That's the culture at Exxon.

Yes there are all listening. I once was talking in my office with the door closed. Someone told me a person was outside listening. I now go to my car to talk about anything personal. Everyone is out to make each other look bad. Gossip is rampant at exxon. I truly hate everyone I work with and around. They are all snakes. I once told a worker that I bought a new car and it was expensive I told them not to tell anyone. In my one on one meeting with the manager I was asked what kind of new car I got. It was a test to see how any information moved. After that I never talked to anyone again. I just sit in my cubicle and avoid everyone. I am probably going to get dinged because I am not interfacing with co workers. So much for the weam scam.

@15g Exactly. I learned this the hard way. Be cautious even when you’re sitting at those lunch tables they have on each floor. If you notice that most people eat alone, it’s because it’s not really a break — they’re listening, waiting for you to say something they can later use against you.

I can’t emphasize enough to be careful who you trust or associate with at work. This can come back to haunt you. Keep it professional. You don’t have friends at work.

It’s not worth it, this company will drain you mentally, take your dignity away and cause great stress in your life. You need to find a job that will give you lasting happiness and joy - or - do what I do, take a gummy.

@g6 suggest you read “go f-ck yourself.” Everyone I know is drowning…

Guessing you are either:
a) a mo--n
b) not doing any work
c) a mo--n who doesn’t do any work (aka a manager)

OP

Suggest you read John Calhoun's classic experiment. We have too many employees for the amount of work we accomplish.

John B. Calhoun psychologist planned the too many mice in the cage experiment
The experiment involving the "too many mice in the cage" was planned by John B. Calhoun, an ethologist and behavioral researcher. Calhoun's work on the Behavioral Sink phenomenon, which he coined after his experiments with rats and mice, has been influential in understanding the effects of overcrowding on behavior and social structures. His experiments have been used as a model for studying societal collapse and urban sociology.

Yes one mistake and you are done. Even if it is not your fault they can blame you for someone else mistake. Exxon is a truly hellish place to work at. I was piped and now enjoy retirement.

@bs the executives know EXACTLY what they created, and they keep turning the heat up every few months: a new policy that’s worse for employees, a new metric to track you with, another benefit taken away..all designed for a single purpose, to make you leave

I can’t find anyone who is happy. Not a single person. Executives have no idea the hellscape they have created.

@OP be very careful who you trust. even supposed mentor and knowledge exchange type meetings with senior managers or leaders are not safe. any slip up or or something you say that they didn’t like…that’ll be used against you during the PDS.

This culture is what you get, everyone wants out.

The company has absolutely devolved from a place that used to look after its employees to a culture of fear.

The only ones who seem to be happy are the executives traveling around the world for photo ops while cutting jobs and barking orders, and the shareholders.
