695 Most intelligent response I've seen in a while. I am originally from CA and went to a state school there, a few years ago when it used to be somewhat affordable. I paid for school myself while I was enrolled. Now, I have no clue how students could pay unless it's with mommy and daddy's money, or loans. That said, in my current state of AZ the price of community college is at 87$ a unit, which after books and fees is double what it would cost in CA. I suspect this has to do with the overall culture of education here.

In California, @$46 per unit, it boils down to approx $600 tuition cost per semester in California. This is not a barrier to entry for anyone, folks with even minor financial issues qualify for Pell grants anyway, which covers all tuition and leaves few thousands for other costs. I am ultra left from the political perspective, but I'd still leave it at this price level as it deters folks who are not serious about school. I think California would benefit if something like this was implemented on the State University level (last 2 years) - the price is $5K per year, which is slightly more than the Pell amount, so, if we can freeze price increases or even bring the cost a thousand or two down I think Cali would be in a prefect shape here. University of California prices are approaching $20K and that madness needs to be stopped. It's a state school darn it...

As ABC News says, it's more of a "political pipe dream." But more progressive states can do this.....http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/wireStory/obama-proposes-publicly-funded-community-college-28105522

Re-pubic-hairs will never admit to anything. They will work for a company that tax payers money goes to line the pockets of the owners and they will turn a blind eye to that but sit at home and complain about Obama and this so called welfare state. In doing so they will gladly take and cash tax payer pay checks and not think twice about it. So Re-pubic-hairs who work for CCI.....why do you take your paycheck and not think twice about it?

It's hilarious reading the idiot ramblings of CCI employees who don't even recognize what welfare whores they are. You want to talk about government waste? Look in the mirror. You may as well get a welfare check every month because you work for a company that is completely government subsidized and funded by taxpayers. How many of you know CCI students who are only here for the stipend checks and never attend class? Yea, all of you. Stinking hypocrites.

There are quite a few stipulations. The administration is committing to pay for 3/4 of the fees. While the state would need to pickup 1/4. That is an issue due to many states financial condition. A student would have to carry a 2.5 GPA amongst other conditions. Not an easy accomplishment for many students. In addition, they have not identified the programs that would qualify -- however - specific graduation rates and placement stats would have to be achieved to keep the program. Community Colleges struggle in both of these spaces. Lastly, as a non for profit ... we would qualify for the funding program

NEWSFLASH dummies.....or others might call them Republicans.......this is just a proposal that has to pass thru 2 Rep-pubic-hairs branches Congress. For you low information voters (as that scum bag Rush "Pill Popper" Limbaugh would call them)the Senate and House would have to pass this proposal and we all know that won't happen. So get your panties out your ass, take a deep breathe and focus on finding a damn job since CCI is closing up shop!!!!! Thank you for your attention to this matter......idiots!

"Put simply, what I'd like to do is to see the first two years of community college free for anybody who's willing to work for it,"

So Mr. President, what do you mean by "anybody who's willing to work for it"? How the heck do you measure or gauge that?

This will eliminate our student demographic, as they cannot qualify to go to a "real" college. They would actually have to take an aptitude test such as the SAT or ACT to get into community colleges.

They can pay for a lot of it by not pissing away taxpayer money on overpriced for-profit schools. See how that works?

In other news the Treasury dept. announced completion of equipment modifications at US mints today. The upgraded equipment should allow for double the output of fiat currency.
