WHO IS WATCHING THE WATCH DOGS? Canines with Fleas

The Government Accountability Office (GAO), a non-partisan congressional watchdog agency, criticized National Accreditation agencies for making few useful distinctions between colleges with weak student outcomes and their counterparts with high outcomes assessment. TRANSLATION:IT's OK to be mediocre or poor when it comes to compliance with accreditation standards. Just sayin'.

"For-profit colleges and the national accreditors that evaluate them lie at the heart of the problem. The GAO found that in general, accreditors of for-profit colleges were more likely to sanction on colleges with student outcomes in the top 25% than they were to terminate or suspend colleges in the bottom quarter —a counter-intuitive outcome that’s hard to figure.

The GAO’s evaluation of the quality of ED’s oversight of higher education was decidedly negative — criticism that comes from a federal agency — and was endorsed by a congressman with a decades-long record as an advocate for students. Retiring California Democrat George Miller, a critic of for-profit colleges, echoed the concerns of the report, which he requested when he was ranking member on the House Committee on Education.

“Congress has tasked accreditors with evaluating the academic strength of colleges and universities, and the American people expect accreditors to hold colleges accountable for student success,” said Rep. George Miller (D-Calif.). “This report raises serious questions about whether we are watching the watchdogs closely enough.” Read more at http://www.mainstreet.com/article/general-accountability-office-rips-ed-on-oversight-of-national-accreditation-agencies

p.s.177 I agree with your comments regarding CCi brass' sole purpose to cover their sorry asses at the expense of students, but would add employees to the victims.

177, if you are going to call out all of the accrediting bodies and ED, you must also call out the IRS. Do you want the IRS abolished by executive order too? Before you say hell yes, think about the unintended consequences. Same with ED - we have concocted a stew that stinketh but without which we would have....(name your messed up scenario here)

CCi not only poisoned their own well, but succeeded in making the entire for-profit education sector suspect while undermining the integrity of ACCSC, ACICS, ABHES, etc ad infinitum including the U. S. Department of Education who is approving the ECMC purchase for the singular purpose of covering their own ass at the expense of students. What a legacy Jack M. and the rest of CCi's ELT has left in its wake! I do hope they go to jail.

144, I agree that ACICS needs a cleanup or a one way ticket out of the US education system. However, if you look at the "genetics" of the industry, you will see the incestuous relationships across accrediting bodies, for profit boards, federal regulators (including CCi's Monitor) and other relationships that are shocking. The original intent of open enrollment, for profit post secondary education was laudable. It is now laughable. Just sayin'

That is why bogus accrediting bodies such as ACICS should be abolished. It is completely fake.

No, 113 clearly doesn't understand how any of this works. Dumbasses like that are a perfect example of why rigorous regulations are so important.

113: You understand that CCi gets basically all its money from Gov. Do you not think that Gov should have some say into how it's being used?

Who cares? The government can't be trusted to oversee anything. All they do is come up with more rules and regulations that degrade the outcome even more. That's how this whole mess got started.
