Thread regarding Corinthian Colleges Inc. layoffs

Fulltime faculty should be on furlough during winter break.

Getting paid for 8 hours of work a day is just wrong. What work did you do this week?

Time off is crazy. Sure, there's a fair amount, if you add it all up, but time between quarters has steadily decreased to about two days, during which you must prepare for the next quarter. Instructors can't take time off because unlike at the K-12 level, there are no substitutes. You may be able to get a fellow instructor to teach your class if he or she happens to teach the same subject, but that's unlikely since they won't be getting paid for it unless he or she is adjunct. Then honest instructors have to make rubrics for grading, grade papers (except for classes with objective finals), correct and comment on them, all of which they aren't getting paid for. Let's not even start with lesson planning and adjustment. Yes, you have to do this fresh each term because no group of students is the same.

OP is clueless. Online Full Time Instructors with ECPO (I don't know about EUO) are not allowed to use vacation except during break weeks, and we can only do so in two day increments, at least that's according to what I was told when I tried to take a week off a few months ago. The reason (which I find absurd) was that if "ago substitute is assigned, there's no way of guaranteeing who is actually teaching the course, so there could be FERPA violations." Insanity.

That is a load of scrap we take vacation days if we want more than the official holidays .Where was all the worrying last year and the year before when we were told use up vacation for no reason over the holidays or we were to show up at housing and clean rooms.Or where was it when we had weeks of vacation stolen from us wake up before you spew more crap

This is simply not true. Instructors do not get paid for the entire holiday break. We only get paid for Christmas Eve and Day, and New Year's Eve and Day, just like all the other employees. If we want to get paid for the other days, we have to use our vacation time. However, we still have to get the work done, which means working all weekend, last weekend and the upcoming weekend. Instructors work 7 days a week, and also tutor students in the evenings. It's in our contract. I have worked every day throughout the holiday, including my "paid days off" and my "vacation days." Find someone else to complain about, as the faculty are more than earning their pay. Anyone who says otherwise is uninformed, or lying.

Congrats to faculty for having a perk that makes someone else mad. I for one would keep taking advantage as long as you can. Happy new years.

As a fulltime online instructor, I get paid for not working during break. I also get 80 hours of vacation, which I can use whenever. Life is sweet!!

503 - Most of them go on vacation. I think if you need to turn your concerns and comments to RVPO's and divisional people who don't do anything ALL year. Please leave the teachers alone.

Go earn an advanced degree so you don't have to be a clock punching monkey.. One of the benefits of education is a better schedule, so maybe improve your own life rather than dragging down others

Maybe you should do work while working instead of worrying about everyone else. Worry about yourself. AT least you are not losing your job in Feb.

This is our vacation time. We get this time off in lieu of accrued vacation. Other than the scheduled time off we accrue 3 days per year which stops accruing at 3 days. Why so angry that we have our vacation time now? You could choose to use your vacation time now too. Instructors do not get more time off than any other employee, no matter how hard administration tries to cause friction between staff and faculty by insinuating we do.

Let me see.... I responded to a few responses, answered an email or two, drank some beer, hung out with family and friends, slept in.... oh I am sorry, are you working because I am still on vacation and getting paid! What work are you doing if you are on here reading posts and posting stupid nonsense like this. You're probably someone working in the service center
