This is a copy/paste job - taken verbatim: What story do you want, the HAL way of layoff? People are called to a secret HR office and are asked if they have their car key, personal cell phone, and wallet with them. If no, the manager is going to get it for them. If yes ---- congratulations! You are officially laid off! The security guy will take you to your car at the garage and see you driving out. If you were taking the shuttle, ok they'll call you a cab. One week later your other stuff left in the office will be delivered to your door ---- if you still live there.

Sounds cruel, but that's the best way to do it - make it quick, let everyone suffer the least, the guys who are doing this are just doing their jobs, they do not enjoy it. People who are watching hate it too. So, just make it quick.
