Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

Old Timers

I see some frustration with Qualcomm "Old Timers" percolating in some posts on this board. I've been with the company for about 19 years, I guess you can put me in the "Old Timer" category. I do not want to go into a back-and-forth discussion who's right or wrong, I just want to better understand what "Old Timer" behaviors frustrate folks that are considering themselves to be "Old Timers". Again, I am not trolling and I am not trying to disrespect anyone, I just want to better understand the perception. Thank you!

A steady stream of "Old Timers" have been "Retiring" over the last few months at QCOM. So something is going on.

In certain divisions there are directors and above who have no connection with the products anymore. They have not written or seen code, design, tests, operations in many years. All they have been doing is write some emails sitting in their glass offices. In most cases mid level to junior level folks have no clue what these big shots do and its a topic of jokes. They just manage their immediate boss, and when things go bad they fire people while finding another convenient project to collect loads of money from. Its a cycle that goes on and on and there is terrible injustice to hardworking talent. Often the bonus pools get exhausted paying their share so not much remains for the poor engineer who was donkeying his butt off on 60 hr weeks. its not the same across all divisions, in core divisions its quite the opposite.

A VP without direct reports is worse than someone being overpaid. He is getting pay for doing nothing but play politics. Some cultures have a lot of those, royalty like rights. So, the old-timers are acting like royalties.

I believe that one perception of old-timers is inequity in pay. Old-timers are almost always paid more and maybe holding more stocks due to seniority. So, for similar work contribution, old-timers are paid more through salary and stock price gain, and this creates resentment from new people. New guys may not consider that today’s Qualcomm is built by the old-timers. To match the life-time contribution of the old-timers, they would have to put in the same number of years. One day they will become old-timers, if they stick around long enough.
