Thread regarding Staples Inc. layoffs

2 Things!!! both red flags

We have a mandatory meeting 12/30/14 @ 6am.. They say OCHA.. a normal start day is 7:30am.. another day we were told our DM is moving to a FC position.. Gary A. will be available to assist.. but DM position won't be filled until after peak.. well if there is no SDO's why would you need DM?

Hey Fat man, screw your in building time, sequence, and stops per hour. And while you're at it make your lazy supervisor actually do something productive for once. Have a spine.

It's amazing that The Tampa SDO keeps screwing quality drivers over and yet corporate does nothing about the way management conducts itself. Here yet again another veteran driver leaves this shit-hole company because of the so called leadership morons who are afraid to go against the policy bible. This makes about seven or eight veteran drivers who have resigned in the last year and a half. Way to go big Ed and the twins!

7AM meeting today concerned changes to the vacation accrual policy, the floating accrual policy, announcements for the 2015 Holiday schedule, KRONOS rounding, etc. Supposed to have another meeting after peak, which was defined as the first two weeks of January (rather than the entire month). So, basically we got a brief stay of execution. However, 3rd party carriers were bidding for our routes back in May (learned this directly from two different people working for two different 3rd party fleet services), and now some of our drivers while out delivering the past few weeks have encountered couriers for a specific 3rd party carrier who have flat-out told said drivers that our routes are going to their company in the next few months. At this point, it's just a matter of counting down the days until we're let go. Everybody knows it's coming, so it will hardly be a surprise. The general consensus among the fleet is to get through peak, collect whatever severance package is offered and many will be relieved when it's finally over. No hate scene or a dramatic "f*** you" to the company - just collect the severance and go work somewhere else.

55123 - 55119 here again. I am not a "corporate Suck up," rather I was a member of management who got the ax this year. I was naive prior to the lay off, but have seen and heard so much since then. I feel very bad for those that are still there, especially those who refuse to believe what is going on/coming up.

In the grand scheme of things Staples will probably disappear in a couple of years. Hell they may even get bought out by Amazon! And as far as middle management and the fleet goes, if supervision would have treated us with respect there wouldn't have been any issues. Too many false prophets working under you Femia!

55119 sounds like one of the corporate suck ups who hasn't been able to face the fact that paper and toner sales are being sunk by WB Masons... its not that it is just slowing down. The competition is killing them in the market is what is really happening... keep believing the ship is ok there 55119... upper management is so messed up it is killing the once great company. Private fleets work... if the right management team is in place.... Staples didn't have the right upper management in place... WB Masons does.

WWAD? What would Amazon do? 😆

Seriously, Amazon is thriving and Staples has made it a point to mirror Amazon's success. The only issue with that is Staples doesn't have the infastructure, customer service or customer loyalty to compete with Amazon. If you still don't want to read the writing on the wall read 55072's post. He/She has some very good information for you to take in.

For those who live in New England ... you have to love the WB Mason ads obviously taking a direct poke at Staples... the guy towards the end of one of their commercials says.... and we deliver with our own trucks and drivers.... Showing once again that WB Mason has it over Staples by a mile... they are kicking their ass in New England.....

It's amusing to read the back-and-forth of comments / insults between those who are obviously hourly associated and those who are mid-level management. The old way of doing things is over. It's all over but the shouting, yet the whining and age-old blame game between management and associates still goes on. Why blame local management? They do what they're told to by corporate. In the end, the decision to close the SDO's wasn't even in their control. This company isn't run for staff. This business, like all others, exists to enrich the top management and the majority shareholders. Anyone working for the company who isn't executive-level management is viewed as just 'the help', and as such is expendable. Keeping people employed is a distant second to making profits. Don't take the impending layoffs personally. Why bother blaming each other at a local level now? The choice was never in your hands to begin with. Staples never intended to be in the delivery business re: owning their own fleet. This transition was a done deal as a concept as far back as 6 years ago.

From what has been said repeatedly over the last few years, the calculus is that the expenses of a company fleet can never be trimmed down enough to be as low as that of going 3rd party. The reality of it is that while in the short-term some longtime customers will be upset that Staples no longer delivers the orders with their own fleet, according to surveys the majority of customers don't care HOW their products are delivered to them as long as they are delivered. The idea that 3rd party can't handle all the packages probably isn't true. Perhaps one single 3rd party carrier can't, but a combination of 3rd party carriers can. The company will find a way to make it work.

Third party can't handle the all these packages according to someone in Tampa. Oh but you guys keep cutting routes almost everyday and hammering us to death with more work from other routes. Must be an insane thought to work with a full crew and have guys get off at a decent time but no you think you got it all figured out doing it your way. You're just paying more overtime to less drivers as opposed to little to no overtime with all of us. It's all coming to an end anyways fellas. Keep living in your fantasy. One day soon the fat man will have a major announcement about the building closing.

Service Delivery Operations are closing folks. No not all at once and not during Peak. Do not, I repeat! DO NOT be left out in the cold when you are informed that your SDO is closing. DO NOT be naive and think that this cannot happen. The next wave of buildings is right around the corner. I hate the be the bearer of bad news especially during Christmas but when I read stupid shit such as what 54189 wrote it must be said. Get ready folks.

You sound like a lead driver or supervisor! All I can do is laugh at the fact that the Fat man gave me a $25 gift card for Staples today. Wow I guess I should be thankful for such a gift for working my ass off all year only for the company to expect me to put my money back into the company to keep them afloat. I guess a printer cartridge and ream of paper is more meaningful to them than a Holiday ham for my Family or even a case of beer to drown my misery over this shit company! ho, ho...

Staples drivers are the most demanding bunch of babies I have ever worked with. They bitch about stop counts on a daily basis. Staples drivers are one of the highest paid fleets in the industry, yet all I hear is how they deserve more. Wait until they get out there and have to settle for 12 bucks an hour, and a 3 year cap on wages. Staples drivers do not provide any more services than a 3rd party driver.

I seriously doubt Staples will be sorry they let their "devoted transportation teams" go. They're a company - they want to do everything with the lowest impact on the bottom line. Running a proprietary fleet of their own with employees needing benefits and sick time and vacation and 401ks and the like is hardly the cheapest way to go about it. I think a lot of folks here are operating under some misconceptions. Staples will get their stuff delivered via third party/commercial carrier, and little to nothing will change from THEIR perspective. Their stuff will still get delivered, and the money will keep rolling in. It makes little difference to them.

If you are a driver/warehouse personnell then more than likely yes that manadtory meeting is to let you all know about the the SDO closing. That is how they did that to our drivers a few months back. They came in held a mandatory meeting then let them know what the upcoming weeks would be like. They had about 8 weeks out until closure date. The drivers here got 3 weeks of in house resume writing and career search training from a 3rd party who was very helpful to them. They also were able to apply for jobs with the courier... some did, some moved on to unemployment or new opportunities. Just remember thru all this.. its not our fault.it never was, never will be... its an unfortunate price to pay for big business. In the end Staples will be sorry they let their devoted transportation teams go. Blessings and prayers to all still facing this.. STAY STRONG!!

I do believe the writing is on the wall.. But when?.. I only believe 90% of what I read here.. Half of me wants to believe we will stay open.. the other says be prepared.. don't be fooled.. cause raising kids, paying bills, trying to have a Merry Christmas.. This weighs on me all the time.. I'm to old to start over again............Keep the updates coming.......

Please do be prepared even if you think that they won't shut your SDO because its a large city with big business... it can and will happen. It happened to our SDO here even though we are a large city. Be prepared..

C'mon everyone! If you are an avid reader/contributor to this forum you should be fully aware that Staples Delivery is going away and will be serviced by a 3rd Party Courier very soon. If you are new, I strongly advise that you scroll down and catch up. Some of course is BS but there is is alot of truth here as well. These are informants who are in high places that do HAVE HEARTS unlike the other narcissistic 90%. Preparedness is the key word here, do not be caught off guard!

Yes they are all lying through their teeth... the meeting is to let you know that they will be closing the SDO in late February 2015. You are not the only one having the meeting I am sure... Ask the boys on 5th floor east... they aren't very good at keeping secrets.... It's why Charlwood left and now Sobb is leaving.... take the signs as you will
