In my time as Staples I was a "Store Manager" and did everything from scheduling, payroll to book keeping and training all employees in all departments. I closed the store each and every night for six years. It was when I was looking for another job when I discovered the corporate offices had me designated as a "Stock Clerk". My efforts to look for a job in management came to a halt when the corporate offices would not even acknowledge that I had a set of keys to the store. The last time I stocked a shelf was in the beginning of my career, however that stopped and I was given a significant raise when I was promoted to manager. My General Manager would not lift a finger to help. My efforts to change this were met with a threat that if I pursued this oversight I wouldn't have a job.

10 years... 7 DMs (4 in the last 2 years) 10 GMs (5 in last 2 years)
See a pattern?
I was poster 43157. I survived 10 years because management was constantly being replaced. I must have had 6 DMs, 18 GMs, and countless assistant managers. I was the one who kept things going through all these transitions. It aged me quite a bit. If you look at the pictures of Jimmy Carter going into office, and what he looked like when he left. That was only 4 years. I was worse. I feel like my 10 years was more like 25 years. It used to be common for people to be there a long time. I guess most of them left by now. I wish everyone luck.
In reference to the poster who was there 10 years:
I don't know how you could endure that long. Six years was it for me. The same thing was true for me. I wanted to transfer to another store and was blocked and denied each time. What really stands out is I had to train three general managers how to close the store, deal with alarm issues, payroll, scheduling, had to train the GM in all departments so ....they could on to evaluate and review my performance. To top it all off, I had more education than any of the managers I trained.
I was in a similar situation as CSL. It always seemed to be the fault of the front end when sales, rewards and ESP numbers were down. Meanwhile, I was closing nearly every night, counselling employees, filling in tech and copy center. Yet when I tried to get to assistant manager, I was struck down. I tried to transfer to other stores, and was struck down as well. After 10 years, I decided this was enough, and got out.
Hmm, that is food for thought.
I have printed proof of my job level just in case of what you are experiencing.
Sorry for your troubles, but I am not surprised they would pull something like that.
