Thread regarding Corinthian Colleges Inc. layoffs

For those of you worrying about your future job prospects

Last week I had a great job interview. (I am an instructor.) The interviewer asked about my job history, specifically what I've taught and my experiences. In passing I mentioned why I am looking (school is selling.) She knew nothing about it, nor did she longer. She was far more interested in my teaching skills and philosophy and what will I bring to the table. I heard back for the next phase and expect to hear an offer early next week. It pays more and it's not focused on Outreach. (I subtly asked. Though I caution you to word that carefully in interviews.) my point is that outside of the bubble, nobody really knows or cares what's going on. And for teaching, it's about education and experience. You can move on. Why don't you? It's tough enough to get a teaching job right now. Do you want your friends to be competing for the same jobs. This one is on the ground, in my metro area. It pays more. When final offer comes in on Monday, I'm out after this term. Best of luck folks. But, this job does NOT need to be a mar on your personal reputation. I took this job in good faith. I did the very best with what I was given. I became exhausted from trying. And if the end weren't near, I would still be gone. I am an educated instructor. Thankfully other schools see that in me. I couldn't keep this up. It's too hard.

As a former CCi instructor, I have moved on fill time at well-respected non-profit university. Students have to compete to get admitted, are thoroughly tested for course placement, and are smart and vested in their education. Outreach is nonexistent. Courses are rigorous. It is so refreshing than having to work with the sh*t students and administration at CCi. The horrible reputation of CCi did not affect my hire one bit. I was asked about it (they were aware) but they knew that instructors were stuck with idiot students through no fault of their own. They knew it all had to do with the recruiting and admissions end!!

806, I am OP. I made a point of saying I was an instructor, because I cannot speak for other departments. But our area has been hit with as many terrible words as any other. Like I said, I took this job on good faith. My fellow instructors are more than qualified. I've had tremendous support before this term than any other teaching job prior to this. (This term is markedly different. New Deans. New rules. Higher losses.) I've often laid awake at night worrying about students who refuse to participate. And I've hoped for the very best for those who do. I want not for so many of my students to not have a red Mark because they got a degree with my college who are smart, intelligent, hard workers. And then I realized that in 10 years of teaching, I've never laid awake before. And I'm not spending another night feeling inferior because of the students I am given. I have to go back to

A healthy place where all of my students are invested in their educations, and excuses are NOT the norm. It's unhealthy and this is not why I chose to get an advanced degree. This experience has sickened me. I really want my best students to succeed. But I can't keep up this shit rat race. I would've given the world to get the help and loans our students get. I worked full time and earned 3 degrees! Full time. Never made excuses. Went to class. Worked shit jobs. I did it. And I can't bear watching students flush that opportunity down the toilet. It is sick.

I'd say that most of the awareness is within the industry. I know the names of EDMC and CEC's school brands, but someone from a non-profit wouldn't. Also, being an instructor is different. It's more about your own education, teaching style and philosophy. Administration and management are going to get more questions about the culture of their (hopefully) current employer. Congrats and good luck!
