Day One Of Furlough

Isn't this just great? A whole week off and I'm on here wasting time I could be spending job searching. Not really, though. I think I applied for everything that I even possibly might qualify for over the weekend. Just taking a day to chill and wondering what it's like back in the office with so many people gone (EUO Tampa). How's everyone holding up? I think I'll go sit on Micky D's patio with a coffee and apple pie and pretend it's a high-end cafe. I'm not getting paid, so no unnecessary spending this week. Cheers!

OP (and others on furlough)....just a couple of thoughts that may or may not be well recieved. One of the best pieces of advice I ever received is to treat your job search like a job - with you as your own boss. Stay very active. Follow-up online applications with phone calls and emails. Reach out to proactively to companies in yourr target market - even if they have no openings posted. Get on LinkeIn an see how you might be conected to someone these companies. Taking a little time for R and R is cwertainly fine....but take control of your fate as well.

Anonymous36496 - maybe the monitor couldn't care less whether we get paid, replaced, treated abusively, or anything else. I'd even be surprised if he was concerned about students. It's really just all for show. We don't know what, if anything, he's been doing because the answer is probably nothing. Just heard from a LinkedIn ex-employee friend that her friend (a manager at Socle) is still saying that they will not be effected by this). Something to do with "Everest is on their own" but the rest expect to survive relatively intact. It'll disgust me if it happens, but not surprise me. I would MUCH rather have new owners who might possibly have a modicum of professionalism or decency to them.

36498 - Keep your chin up and keep looking. I'm a RIF from February and didn't find a decent job until July. It's discouraging, but eventually you'll find something. Luckily I found a position that's much more stable, and much less unpleasant, than Everest. It was worth 5 months of anxiety.

Think about it. Why would they continue hiring if they can't afford current payroll? My feeling is that it's not going to end well for current employees.

There is no more coffee. They didn't pay that vendor either.

At least you have a job to go back to. I got the boot after last term. Still looming for a new job. Sucks.

494 - It seems like the monitor wouldn't allow advertising expenses. I'd say they were prepaid and just haven't run out yet, but this started over three months ago. I'm no expert but it's hard to believe a company already financially struggling would prepay ads for over three months. It's also suspicious that we have so many current job postings on cci.edu. maybe the monitor has been paid off and Jack & Co really think if they just keep saying "business as usual" and act like nothing's changed, then it'll be all right.

I was watching TV this morning enjoying my unpaid time off and there was an Everest commercial. WTF: They can't pay us but they can pay for advertising?

Day One of Half the Friggin' Staff Being on Furlough: Typing this from my phone in the loo because this is the only few moments I've had to myself all day. It's crazy around here! That, and also sad too somehow. Not a nice place to work today. Or ever, but especially today.
