Thread regarding Corinthian Colleges Inc. layoffs

Why do the good ones get let go but the bad ones stay

Many have written on this board about the corporate and regional leaders but what about those at the campus level. I can only speak of the Lakeland FL campus but I can only imagine this is the case at many other campuses. The CP and the Dean at the Lakeland Campus are the worst. The CP has insulted staff, faculty and students on a regular basis and many have reported it to HR but NOTHING was done. Before he started there in January, it was a fun campus to work at but since he started, the whole atmosphere has turned to crap. The Dean tries to put on the façade of BEING THERE for everyone but she is only looking out for herself. They expect the staff to work to the bone putting in long hours but they don't do the same. The Dean took more sick days in the first few months she was there than I have in the last 5 years. She has her "favorites" and it is obvious to all the rest of us. The bottom line is, many complaints have been made to HR about the behavior of both of these leaders but nothing has been done. I have seen people get fired for much less. So many good people have been a victim of RIFs and others have left due to the leadership at the campus. Why do these people get to continue to intimidate and mistreat employees? I am sure nothing will be done now either - they will leave the problem to the new owners.

But we're not talking about an ineffectual instructor or two. We're talking about blatantly abusive management practices that were allowed and even condoned by the corporation. That's not something you see everywhere.

I hate to break this news to everyone, but there are good and bad instructors on any campus at any school. I remember failing a math class because the instructor at my university didn't speak English! Bad seeds aren't unique to cci. That's the way it is everywhere.

I recently finished my program at the Lakeland campus and I can totally agree with this person who posted about the behavior of the campus president and the dean. When the new president started, he made the instructors take down ALL the stuff they had on the walls of their classrooms - many of these were projects we had done and we proud to display them. He said they were not professional - how insulting to the students especially when he does not act professional or respectful to us. As for the dean - she walks around all day asking if she "looks ok" and complaining she is not feeling well. I was in the academic office many times and heard her ask her staff - she was more worried about how she looked than she was about her staff or students. Also, the new president made the ambassadors stop selling hot dogs and nachos - the money raised was used for good causes but he said it was not professional. What a joke.

I think you're referring to DR, who was COO. Yes, he lasted a long time considering his behavior, much longer than any other company would have tolerated. I believe he was let go in the end though. Man, was that guy a crazy MF! I still have nightmares about the admissions calls. And I remember coming in Mondays to the drunk weekend emails!!

This is nothing new. Back in 04-05 we had a Division Pres who would literally yell and curse in 10-minute long crazed rants during conference calls. He would get drunk on the weekends and send mass emails saying everyone in a certain area (say student finance) was going to be fired. We heard that HR was "keeping an eye" on him, but they didn't do anything.

Anonynous19147 I absolutely agree - there are good and bad eggs everywhere. However, in my previous places of employment, I have consistently seen those "bad eggs" get weeded out. I was so disappointed to see nothing being done at this campus. It is sad that the leaders do not see that if you have HAPPY employees, you have productive employees - if you treat them with respect, they will treat you with respect etc.

I am was calling students and one was from the lakeland campus who was rather disappointed with the instructors as well as the administration. Lik with everythng you have good instructors and bad instructors, you have good adminstrators and bad adminstrators, but it was clear that Lakeland has some issues. That is not to say all instructors there have issues or are the bad instructors....it is shame when there are good caring instructors put get discounted due to the bad eggs and bad administration. Being a good instructor is like playing a game of chess. You want to do right by the students but at the same time need to play the delicate chess game of adminstration games. Now with that said...the same can be said for public education at every grade level, the same can be said for many businesses. There are good employees and bad employees anywhere you go. There are good managers and supervisors and poor managers and supervisors in any business. We need the good ones to push hard, trudge forward and seek to gain entry into those leadership positions...no matter what business sector one is in.

No, I didn't meant to imply that I have seen HR take action in the past. I meant that this is the first time at the Lakeland campus since I started working there that such bad treatment was exhibited - and when reported, nothing was done.

Seriously? You've seen HR take action against leadership? I'm not talking about a randy admissions rep or bi-polar finance person, but actual leadership. I've never seen that, though I will say that if you go back over 10 years, HR had some good people. They would at least try to facilitate people working things out.

I have been at CCi for a while but this is the first time I have seen such bad treatment of employees and students go "unpunished".

I'm not sure how long you've been with CCi, but since you sound surprised at HR's lack of action I'm thinking not very long. HR at CCi has always served as a sort of mosquito light, drawing in unhappy employees and potential whistleblowers so they can be let go. They have no interest in how a campus leadership performs their duties. The HR aspects of that are literally irrelevant to the company, especially in a "right to work" state like Florida that will not protect employees. The only thing that matters is the bottom line. If they could get the rest of you to foolishly work long hours, it saved them from a couple more salaries and justified their own.
