Sounds to me like had nothing to do with being smarter, seems like instructors where the planned fall guys. Management were nothing more than thieves with a plan.
I don't understand how they knowingly recruit students and them place the blame on instructors. Instructors spend a huge part of their time doing outreach. It's exhausting. I hate being ignored, yelled at for calling students at noon who were clearly sleeping, and otherwise unable to
Get students to
Participate. If they are just there for the stipend, how can we force them to do the work? And why is it the instructors' problems to get students to
Participate? They should have started a retention / outreach department, if they were smarter.
In the Comp I class, the graded assignments for weeks 1 and 3 (none for week 2) are one paragraph narratives. The second paragraph is a revision of the first. Students never, ever revise. So basically, the 25-50% who bother to participate and do the work, spend the first 3 weeks of class writing one paragraph. And at least 3 other assignments are just answering questions from the book. And yet, they still have a 15-40% retention level on that class. Students just don't participate. They get their stipends and show up to post a one sentence thread in the discussions every 13 days so the don't get tossed out. I've had one class where students have to turn in an essay and it's the only option for attendance. Well they haven't been there in 2 weeks so they write 'for attendance' on a Word doc and submit it to the Dropbox. I failed them but since attendance is automatic, they have now been marked present. I've wondered how Soooo many students knew to do this. It was an online class. Did someone tell them to do that?
Spin this, management!!
You've witnessed this first hand, but tell us we reap what we sow? What about you? Even witnessing but doing nothing about it makes you part of the problem. Shame on you!!!
