“Stores have to earn the right to stay open.” That’s a direct quote from Ron Sargent. It’s this type of negative attitude that filters right down through field management. Ron, Demos, and Otis know that they are fighting a losing battle. They are planning on closing more stores, and those stores that they keep open, they will be so thinly staffed that those employees will be so stressed out. Good luck trying to get help in a Staples. It’s so funny the people posting on here defending the company. For those of you who are, there will be a day when this company will turn its back on you. Do not think that your support of this company will save your job when you are laid off. Have you earned the right to keep your store open?

I have to agree. CEO's don't have to worry about being homeless or on assistance. The CEO will be there another day to tank another company and tell his workers that the only responsibility the company has is to it's shareholders. That and the CEO has to make "Hard Choices"...that's corporate speak for laying off workers in a time where unemployment is unprecedented and no one can find a job in this economy.
Too bad he doesn't have to earn the right to be CEO!
If anyone is scared of a layoff I work with a company that wants to help people make money. If this business is not for you great you might know of someone that it might be for.

In the land of the layoffs...don't trust anything from Staples Corporate.
I remember Michel Moore's first film, "Rodger and Me". The CEO said (after the entire town of Flint Michigan was laid off) the only responsibility the company has is to it's share holders. Don't expect anything from Staples.
Staples is not the same as it was in the 90's. There is no service. My experience is you are on your own!
It's that type of negativity that will no longer make Staples an effective brand name. When I went to Borders I was hit with a sales pitch to buy their worthless Borders card. I told them no thanks, just window shopping, I'd say and get a better price on Amazon.com. By telling it's managers that they have to earn their right to stay open...not only will it create hostility but they will wrongly displace that feeling on to their customers. The morale is rock bottom now. It's going to be worse after the 500 closings. An ad campaign the scale of a BP (post oil spill) is not going to save this place that has a reputation for bad service. I don't care how many corporate people comment on this board. Staples is not the same Staples we knew and shopped at in the late 90's.
