Thread regarding Merck & Co. Inc. layoffs

Downsizing yet pushing forward

Many layoffs, it seems it never stops here at Merck. You'll never be safe here and you'll always have to look around to understand what's going on. Sometimes the culture here at Merck is felt a little stale, lots of friction and quarreling between different units (manufacturing, research, sales), incredibly, very painful and complex business processes especially in the HR areas - think policy/compensation... Merck also has a HEAVY focus on litigation, not sure what's driving this but we are fierce and relentless when it comes to legal stuff. Overall, no recent layoffs to report but I can tell you that things are constantly evolving here and that Merck is downsizing all the time (yet, we do hire also)

They keep shrinking the workforce through attrition and job eliminations and do not back-fill. The people that remain are doing 2 or 3 different roles and have 2-3 times the workload. I left due to the 60 hour weeks, they have a ridiculous business model that is not sustainable.

What does this even mean: "Downsizing yet pushing forward"? So, your business is shrinking but you are going forward? How's that possible?
