They tell you to feel free to apply for open positions in the future before you get the perp walk out the door, but it's just to make you feel better. Most companies rarely hire back laid off employees. They unfairly think the rehires will have a chip on their shoulder or they will want salary and benefit levels restored. It is better for HR to seek out newbies they can pay less or better yet a contractor. I nearly fell out of my seat when I was perusing through the org chart on RJ net. I couldn't believe how many people have the title "contractor". Back in the old days at RJ, that was rare.
