Recent news sources have reported layoffs of 300, 1000, 1700, 2000. Also reported is the idea that IBM has become more transparent regarding layoffs. Are these just different estimates of the same layoff or do they just keep happening in different amounts while IBM only reports one of them? Looks like mass confusion to me.

confirm layoffs in blockchain and AI space (or what IBM sells as AI, which is really machine learning - Watson). Estimated amount to be in the 3000 neighborhood
Keep one thing in mind - the corporate is talking layoffs... to the media... this was not the case before. I think that pressuring them (watching ibm and this site) worked to an extent... at least they are talking.
now, they lie and obfuscate but that will get resolved in time too - we need to keep the pressure up. if you are not familiar with watching ibm go visit their FB page - many leaks happen here, the media is monitoring it. i am assuming you are familiar with layoffs.com as you are on the site right now...

Why does it matter? There's only one thing thats certain. IBM will continue to layoff their workplace.
