Thread regarding IBM layoffs

I got an offer

And it comes with significantly higher pay than I have here. Makes me wonder if IBM has been underpaying me all these years without me even realizing it... And probably not just me... For some reason I thought we were well within industry standard in pay, now I'm not so sure anymore.

Has anybody else had any similar experiences?

IBM has always underpaid. The biggest raise I ever got was the one I negotiated for myself to up their initial offer 15 years ago. I stayed for the perk of working from home and fairly flexible work schedule which was important for my and my family.

@ZtjJTvm-2vat,

I was told this by a recruiter:

All previous FTE's that quit to become contractors cannot be hired back as FTE's.

A ton of people switched to contractors because IBM was only paying some $15 per hr.

Contractors range was $45 - $55 per hr so of course most switched to earn their FMV.

Burger King now pays $15 per hr so it shows you how bad of an employer IBM truly is.

IBM never paid exceptionally well, they aim for just above average and it takes you many years to get there. People did not join IBM for the best money, they joined for everything else IBM provided employees. Of course that is all long gone, so there is really no reason for people to join IBM now.

Did IBM change their rules at some point to make former full time employees ineligible to come back as contractors? I thought I recall hearing something like that?

Left IBM for Amazon almost a year ago and got a $96,000 raise. Knew then that IBM had been below market for years. Was a band 10 in US Marketing.

Just think how many time you were lucky to have a job every time they gave you a $600 bonus every 2 years. LOL I wish I had 1/1000000000% of the money they spent with HR consultants to keep my salary and bonuses so low. I could retire in style !!!!

This is not an IBM problem, it is a global problem.

IBM does need to keep their raises and bonuses more competitive though. We are paid on the level of an IPP. Even Accenture gets more than us.

Yes. I left a year ago and got a $15K pay bump. IBM make all the excuses under the sun to not give you a pay rise. And when they do its pitiful.

I've been denied Band 9 promotion twice. Put in the work and got screwed.

Last time I took an above region promotion... asked for in place band promotion and instead they gave me a raise... instead of the band... It is a band 9 position mind you.

As others say... Easiest way to get a raise or bump in band at IBM is to leave and come back.

@bff is correct, you can always get more money by moving. Until your resume looks like somebody who is always moving for more money, anyway.

The longer you stay in one place, the more "underpaid" you probably become. In most places you are trading that off for some job security -- experienced people who know the company and are proven performers are the people the company most wants to retain (plus, you're cheaper than an outside hire replacement). Of course, that no longer applies at IBM.

if you share your offers, may be more IBMers will leave on their own!

Not sure why all the negative reactions. Same thing just happened to me. Ibm defiantly doesn't keep up with the market, and the benefits are pretty poor too.

Just curious, can you share what the ballpark offer was?

Same things happen in other companies, new guys get paid much more than the older workers at a company, because if you start at low wage you will not get much raise every year, and the new guy who has experience can ask for better pay, such as yourself at the other company. So it's not an IBM Problem.
