Thread regarding IBM layoffs

How likely would you be to refer someone to work at IBM?

Scale 1 to 10. 1 being not likely at all...

A job is a job. Bills have to be paid. You still have to eat. I'd tell anyone don't stay longer than 3 years. Continually look for better jobs elsewhere.

I would give it a 1 simply because I can't go lower. Run, RUN, RUN!!! away. It's a toxic work environment and IBM doesn't care about either it's employees or it's clients. If you want to be treated like a number, like a nobody, and if you want a TERRIBLE manager, it might be the place for you. If you value your sanity and health, DO NOT APPLY. Let the door slap you firmly in your arse as you walk out.

It's a horror show. These recent layoffs (many, many friends of mine) prove the point. They've let rockstars go. They couldn't possibly care less what they are doing to the people they are cutting. To them it's "just bidness," to those affected, it's their life, their security, their livelihood.

Worst company I have ever worked for. I'm looking to get out before the grim reaper comes for me. Any by grim reaper, I mean DEATH. This place is k--ling me, and many of my colleagues.

When I was offered a job at ibm I asked my uncle who was a senior manager at a large uk telecoms company. His response was "oh, that bloody place". And when I told my university professor that ibm had offered me a job he said "you don't want to go there". That was 30 years ago.

My son interviewed with IBM when he got his EE/CE degrees. This was not at my suggestion but the interviews (he was going for a couple of jobs in the P Series hardware group) were a ten minute drive from his college digs.

Both interviews were a disaster. The first hiring manager was over two hours late to the interview. Neither had read his resume. Neither hiring manager seemed to have much engagement in the process. And the one offer that he got (he withdrew from consideration after the first interview) was stupid low, sh--e benefits and no chance for working at home. Spending all day in a windowless cubicle is not something a 22 year old aspires to these days and who would blame them. He subsequently got a job at almost double IBM's offer with three weeks of vacation and better benefits.

I would have had a hard time recommending IBM as an employer before that. Afterwords -- and after living in RA purgatory for another decade on -- I'd have a hard time recommending IBM to anyone looking for employment.

So cast my vote as a "1" only because there's nothing lower....

I have not heard one good thing about them in over 15 yrs externally. Those who take new positions from the outside must be either clueless, desperate, or a part of a radar scheme with the intent to turn and burn. I have considered IBM a Ponzi scheme for quite some time and am sad for the clients that have been entangled in their products through legacy products and services, Legacy relationships between people - use your imagination - Politics, or stupidity of the staff at the client.

IBM is not a positive line item on your resume these days. You can get some points back by declaring that you joined via an acquisition. Even then, anything more that 3 years is difficult to defend.

I have been thinking about listing my IBM tenure under the heading: Other.

If I like the person, then 1. If I don't like them, then still 1.

Turns out I don't dislike anyone that much.

-100 ... Even if it was the last company in the world hiring I would still not recommend it. Save you health and well being and do anything else but work there.

@ZsEWjGn-1tzd: Age discrimination is NOT legal, but unless you get a manager on tape saying something to the effect of "let's lay all the expensive old farts off" it's next to impossible to prove.

Sat down at Thanksgiving dinner a while back with my nephew. he as offered a job by IBM asked me what I thought. I asked him a few questions one being who else had offered him a job. Once I heard what the other offers were my answer was quick and simple. Take the other offer. Today he is very happy and making a very good living and not having to look over his shoulder for the next RA. So I give it a 1

Let me also say this.. it pained me to not recommend IBM but the company is not the company I once believe in.

Only if under 30 and just need big name on resume for a couple years. I guess it's totally legal to age discriminate and so called laws are ignored with no enforcement.

  1. Watched as people got RA’d left and right. I got f---ed over on my last two attempts at a band increase and that is with a stellar review year over year. Got f---ed out of my last referral bonus being told that ibm doesn’t give referral bonuses anymore.

I have to say -1 because I did refer someone and did not get my referral bonus.

Reason: because the innovation centers are considered temp IBM location's not permanent.

I say 0. IBM is OK if you are young and hopeless. Very bad support for new people. Their infrastructure is failing and you are on your own when you have a problem unless you understand indian accent and willing to reinstall your system every time you got a problem. It is a swamp indeed.

If you are young and not looking for long term employment, then I'd reccomend IBM as a 8. If you are middle aged, I give IBM a 1.... Run away... Seek employment elsewhere.

Either 1 or 10 based on whether or not I like the person.

IBM is now something you have to explain on a resume, not something that's a benefit. As to the question, why would I recommend someone come to a company that I'm going to leave? If I believed it had a future I'd stay...I don't, so am voting with my feet.

If you want to get into consulting and GBS is your option I'd say yes. Stay here 3 to 5 years and make a manager, you'd be set careerwise. It's critical to leave as soon as you make manager.

One! IBM is resume poison for young people.

I actively discourage people I like from joining.

I would say 5. It is a job like any other job at any other companies. It will last a while with no guarantees of any sort.
