Retirement Incentives ?

With rumors of further layoffs, do you think they might be preceded by a retirement incentive?

None of these new people know anything, it's more of a social gathering ping pong fest than anything. Yup get off the iPhone and do some work.

I work at Arlington assembly. Rumor on the floor has a $100,000 buyout. “Supposedly” a ex union rep. heard that this is what they want to offer GM during contract negotiations. But again, it’s here-say. Wish I had a dollar for every rumor I have heard in my 33 years. Be a rich man. But there is a lot of us ready to go and this contract may be a mass exodus of senior employees. Give space to my 22 year old who just hired in as a full time temp. Not getting my hopes up for him but time will tell. I hired in knowing my plant would close and here I am 33 years later. Here’s hoping.

If the Millennials are doing such a great job then why hasn’t the stock price soared? Us older and wiser folks saved this company after the bankruptcy. Many of us older folks just got rehired at other companies for our experience. Now you Millennials will need to put down your iPhones and pay more attention at the meetings cause we won’t be there to clean up your mistakes for you anymore. Cool only gets you so far. Good luck to you.

The mind begins to get mushy around the age of 60 years and older. That is why it is so important to get the older gen out of the office. I see it all the time where the mushy mind struggles with the most simple of computer tasks.

Frustration with new programs, difficulties in basic computer knowledge, non adaptations to a more responsive form of operations.

Please get out of the office and go enjoy your plain white Nike Monarch shoes, and the BBQ with your families.

So it's ok to discriminate if you pay them a small amount of severance to waive their rights?

Most people hate the idea of going to court and have no idea what their case is worth anyway, so they'll take a pittance to feel like they "won" and move on.

No, GM is not gambling with age discrimination lawsuits since to receive the severance pay package of up to 6 months of pay, the person laid off needs to sign an agreement that they won't sue GM. GM has very smartly targeted those older individuals who are very close to reaching 30 years at GM (which allows them to receive their full pensions at 62 instead of 65). If they force this group out prior to 30 years, it will save GM substantial amounts in pension payments.

The company is mismanaged from the CEO all the way down to the lowest level manager.

The people responsible for making decisions make bad ones.

To 2ctk: GM is not Diversity Company. It is a male & female balance with 90% white management company. They are lazy and incompetitive, this is why the Company is sinking.

GM is sinking. Car sales down and high inventories. Soon they will turn into the government and sell cars at a loss to improve cash flow and to stay afloat. Ms Mary can't handle the economic changes. Diversity is important why because it makes companies fail. I see it all around me. Individual employees need to take charge of there individual careers and not be so tied to a paycheck. Gotta love how companies manage there little sibling darlings. Its just a matter of time before the stock sinks below 30.00. And yes more layoffs are coming so brace yourself. it's fun to watch employees freak out.

“Pensions? I thought they stopped those”

They did, for those hired on or after 1/1/2007.

They also redefined the terms for existing pensions. People hired before 1/1/1988 have a specific plan, those hired from 1/1/1988 through 12/31/2000 have different terms, those hired between 1/1/2001 and 12/31/2006 have yet another set of terms.

You should take a look at your benefits book sometime.

I was hoping this CEO was going to do great things for GM bit instead her primary focus is flying the g-- pride flag.

What the hell does that have to do with any business? What people do behind closed doors is their business, so does this mean straight people get a special flag too?

What the hell, fire this CEO already it's beyond a joke. Good help us all

Yep the millennial generation where everyone is a winner and everyone gets a trophy well just because! Barf.

I'd rather have the older crew around too, shut your mouth and open up you're ears.

The generation behind these millennials will be the generation to make a big difference. Good help us when these millennials have kids, but from statistics say they aren't having many kids or any at all...GOOD!

Maybe the 70 year old is working because he needs to earn money to live on, the same reason all of us work.

No he is a good guy, and is deserving of his job. It's not about age discrimination at all I would say. I think it's about making people offers to leave if they choose to.

I was contract for along time at GM like 17 years, I wish I could have gotten into the uaw or hired, of I'm lucky I'll work until I die on the job because of life set backs like this, everybody's circumstance is different and the 70 year old probably likes the people and likes to keep busy? I'm sure they have offered him and others great deals over the years to leave, I wish I had that chance like he did to just work! He is protected and fortunately still working. I saw alot of young people of all backgrounds let go not just older folks, all ethnic backgrounds too. I personally loved working with the older people because they we're just awesome to talk with and all of the stories they had to share. I miss that allot.

Is the 70 year old still doing his job?

If so, why is he less deserving of his job than you are?

This company needs to sink into nowhere land. This whole Diversity c-ap is ruining corporate America. Put the best qualified person in the position not some damn token. It hurts the upper and lower echelon's of corporate America and comes across like a real loss.

If there were incentives only offered to black people to leave the company, do you think there would be lawsuits?

Age and race are both protected classes covered by the same laws, but no one thinks twice about trying to get rid of the old people.

Generally a retirement incentive is presented every year in late summer or early fall to all those who qualify. Old timers will refer to it as “the magic number,” some number of years of service plus age equals X amount of benefits from the GM pension.

This happens every year.

A reduction of force severance offer is what was given out late last fall to every employee who, by Dec 31, had 12 years of service, regardless of age, and regardless of pension eligibility.

Don’t panic if you see folks who have been with GM a very long time talking about their retirement offer. It’s not unusual for GM to sweeten the offer in some years to voluntarily reduce headcount.

I think they're gambling with age discrimination lawsuits if they keep focusing on getting rid of older employees.
