The current political climate is very anti-union. This is a fact that applies regardless of the party in question.

The courts (in general) do not side with unions or organized labor.

Most of the population only hears about unions when they go on strike, and most reliable polls tell us that people (in general) don't care.

In other words, we're living in the 1890s. That's what the railroad workers unions are up against.

Strike if you want, but don't expect much.

It’s not that easy to be a contractor for the railroad. UP makes them carry x amount of insurance and it isn’t cheap. They’re also required to take classes yearly on their own dime and it’s a per person kind of thing. That’s why we don’t have the mom and pop companies clearing wrecks. It’s basically corman and hulcher and that’s the entire system.

You are right! Put the pressure on your union. Make the be the ones that jump on their desk! If they don’t simply vote someone in that will! If I do my job they should do theirs.

People need to put pressure on the Union. It is funny how people on here try to tell you how it is a bad idea. Trying scare tactics to persuade everyone against striking. The truth is, yes the U.P. will sue to make everyone go back to work. But it also forces them to the table to negotiate. The main thing it does is scare investors. That is where the real power is. The unfortunate reality here is, stand up for yourself or lay down and accept things for the way they are. The scare tactics are there to keep everyone on the merry go round. As far as contractors go, there aren’t enough of them yet to be able to run the day to day operation, yet. But sooner or later they will. If the decision is to fight, then now is the time or it will be to late. If the Union won’t back it, then vote them out! Just me personally, but I don’t want to have to tell my family that everything we have is gone because I chose to lay down and hope for the best.

The IBEW wasn't there to support me before I was laid off, they aren't there for me now that I'm laid off, and I don't think they will be there in the future for me. I sincerely hope Trump breaks up the unions since the IBEW has done nothing but take my union dues and walk away when things got tough for them. They won't strike.

Unpopular Opinion: Your union leadership have 6 figure office jobs, free travel, expenses paid to top hotels, paid UP country club passes and consistently vote without your input. Your union dues are worthless except they assign your vacation dates giving themselves the best holidays without having the seniority. They advise you to sign for reprimands you have no business signing. They are weak and uneducated. You are free to do as you are told. Your union will not stand with or for you to the detriment of their easy jobs, family life and paychecks.

Take a few minutes to learn how Ronald Reagan (R) dealt with the air traffic controllers who went on strike during the 1980s. If UPRR workers decide to go on a general strike they'll be back on the job by executive order, court order, or both before anyone even knows what happened. There are also plenty of contractors who can fill the labor vacuum left by striking workers, and other railroads (BNSF) who will gladly haul the customers cargo.

The only thing you're shutting down by going on strike is your paycheck.

It would be better if everyone laid off sick together for a few days. They can end a strike but if everyone catches a cold at the same time that’s just the way it is.

There isn't anything that resembles the inter-craft unity across departments needed to sustain a prolonged system-wide strike. The logistics aren't there either, nor is the union-level leadership.

There is also the Railway Labor Relations Act and the stipulations placed upon initiating a general strike enumerated therein that the unions will have to contend with. UP will almost certainly sue to have the strike broken. Existing legal precedent suggest that UP will likely prevail.

Also (and here come the downvotes), the current presidential administration is the most anti-labor in the past century, and this has been reflected in everything from their appointees to head major government agencies (USDOT, NTSB, FRA, etc.), court appointments (Neil Gorsuch, et al), and several executive orders and MOUs.
