Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

Without the ability to feed my family and pay for my children and feed my children, what am I as a man?

Sadly this is happening to us. It hurts so bad I don't talk about it.

You need to deal with job loss each and every day and plan your life beyond any given job. Some are weak and throw in the towel. Others are strong and can bounce back. Me I am in the middle and accepted the fact it only a freeking job. Don't kiss up, Don't kiss arse, Don't beg for a raise BUT ALWAYS keep looking for that job that pays the bills and a little more. Stay in shape and be positive in all your thoughts. There is a reason you are being treated the way you are. You have not seen anything until YOU are dealt a health issue that you may not be able to overcome. Good Luck.

You are not your job. Your self-worth and manhood should not be equated to your job. Think about it, you really have very little control over what happens to you at your job. Yes, your good work sometimes will make a difference but not always. You have probably read many posts on here where people know someone who was a good worker but in the end it didn't make a difference and they were cut. The best advice was given earlier when someone said you should view yourself as an independent contractor, always try gain skills that will boost your employability and give your employer your best efforts. But never put your job ahead of you or your family.

Always trust in the Lord! I was a contract employee cut in December, I am having a very hard time finding a decent paying job. I have never been unemployed in my life, now I'm trying to pick up odd jobs just to stay float. Hopefully I'll find something better and soon.

The lesson I’ve learned from all of this is to never have loyalty to a company. Always look at yourself as an independent contractor that is employed by YOU. Just because GM isn’t cutting you a check anymore doesn’t mean you are any less of a man or any less capable of finding income. We all qualify for unemployment for 6 months after severance. But above all, pray to the Lord and be thankful for what you do have. He will provide. Stay strong everyone, life is a series of peaks and valleys.

You have to be flexible. In my long working career, I have changed professions 5 times. Each one of them requiring a different skill set. Some jobs were set backs and other advances in pay and promotion. During the last rescission I went back to college (thank you Obama for paying for that) and brushed up on advanced math and science. When the economy started picking up, I found a low paying job soldering PCB's, something I use to do 20 years prior to that, but this job at least paid the bills. It took 1.5 years of that pee-on work (yes they treated me like pee) before I found a job that paid twice as much. Was with them for 6 years and got laid off again but this time got another job in 3 months that pays almost double but less benefits. I am still there and I am not only paying the bills but I am proudly supporting my family. Did I mention that I am a women and that my husband is disabled? You have to learn to move on when you lose a job, if you don't you will pay for it mentally.

In 2016, Trump said he'd bring back coal mining jobs and the miners would get rich.

Hillary said coal mining jobs were going away, and weren't coming back.

Trump lied and got elected, and Hillary told the truth and didn't.

A lot of people can't see through the lies and let themselves get conned, because they WANT those lies to be true.

Sounds like the guy in the article got conned and is just starting to realize it.

The woman crying in the breakroom saw what was really happening.
