Unemployment

Looks like if you've been collecting UE while still under severance payments, you may have a problem. Couple of people I'm still in contact with said they are being questioned by the UE Office.

Do a search on "Fact Sheet 125, How severance pay affects unemployment benefits". It's a publication of the state of Michigan. Basically, you can't get unemployment benefits until your severance runs out.

Don't feel sorry for people who tried to scam the state, or were just too dumb to read the requirements when they signed up for Unemployment.

correct, you can't collect severance and UE at the same time. You have to wait until severance is over then apply for UE

when you certify for UE they ask if you have received any kind of pay including severance. if you say you are receiving severance you won't get paid UE and if you don't say you are getting severance and are lying they warn you that you are committing fraud....

so yep if you are collecting both at once you have a big problem.

Yep. Was mentioned many months ago. Don't collect until any form of employee earned income is extinguished. If you take a payment, you have to report it, or you can choose to forego collecting for that week. IE, as an example, perhaps you take a one time lump 401k payout. But, two consecutive non-certifications removes you from the system - and you must enroll again.. UE has changed significantly over the years.

The way they handle fraud claims for those receiving payments that should not, has changed as well. Fortunately, it's more reasonable than their 4X repayment penalty nonsense of the past. Sometimes, mistakes happen, perhaps like those collecting severance and unemployment simultaneously when they shouldn't. When in doubt about anything unemployment, call the office and ask.
