Where to now?

How are things looking for people over fifty in our industry right now?

2tds -I broached the topic on a different thread and my comment was deleted. So even broaching the subject, anonymously, is challenging. Ageism is probably not going away anytime soon. Maybe we should brainstorm a list of 2nd careers for which age doesn't seem to be an issue. One that comes to my mind immediately is politician, but there are not very many “openings” in that field.

What’s next, I don’t know. But it isn’t a gig in this industry. Time to move on and not look back.

I have 3 friends who had been a reservoir engineer, production engineer, completion engineer and they had been working in the oil industry for the last 27 to 35 years in independents and majors. They had been laid off since 2015-2016. They network and search job online weekly, and until now had not been offered any job.

The reason is not because of they are lack of experience or university degree or overseas experience or not of the right skin color. It is that the three of them are now at the age of 55, 59 and 62.

You figure it out.
