Thread regarding Union Pacific Corp. layoffs

When a company is doing this well, there shouldn’t be this kind of laying off

I am an agreement job holder as well. I do not think I’m entitled to a job. What I think is when a company is doing very well as Union Pacific is there shouldn’t be this kind of laying off. While I think there are bad performing employees in all aspects of this company. Everyone has contributed to the success of this in someway. The problem I see is Union Pacific never comes up with is own ideas. Always copying off of someone else’s ideas. While some are good not all of it is. The people that work here are constantly trying to adapt to whatever flavor of the week rules. They even change or don’t follow the very processes they come up with. On the mech side we used to work on a lot more units than we do now. Work flowed easier and faster when the processes are followed. It’s very hard to see a shop empty and management pulling every work task out they can to make a unit and, still be positive when I’ve seen dozens of my fellow workers go home. There are so many problems that need to be addressed than just cutting man power that we have no control over as craft. We are set up for failure daily. When these new ideas and processes come up and do t work it’s always blamed on the craft. Actually everything ultimately is blamed on the crafts. I just want a chance. I want a shop without chaos where when it’s time for me to go to work I have EVERYTHING I need to do my job.

Who cares about employees, as long as my stocks are paying off.

Should have been done a long time ago. The mass disaster is how inefficiently it has been run for so long.

This company is a complete joke. The sooner you accept that and move on the better.

To the original poster of the thread this was from(ZFiOIBY-omn). I agree with you to a extent. I have heard many times that management are not in the business of firing people. Unions have said they are not in the business of firing people. With this kind of thinking we as a craft are left with no set guidelines or expectations. When this happens only a persons own set are morals come into play.

Management always finds a way to work around the d---beats by riding the good workers.

While I agree just cause the company is doing good doesn’t mean there wasn’t waste. That waste is in all areas.

As a company union or not you have to be able to set productivity standards. When there not met you get rid of those people.

We all know yet some will admit there are some that should be fired today.

While I thank the union for a lot of things.

I don’t thank them for keeping a d---beat employed for life.

This also applies to the company as in the end the company has let the employee set the standards.

I originally posted the thread this was replied to and I don’t like the state of business either but my job isn’t to make those decision to reduce forces. Just cause profits are good doesn’t mean it’s acceptable to have 1000 extra men standing around because they can afford to do it. My work load had doubled since the furloughs but I’m still able to do it rather easily so apparently there is room to make efficiencies. The company is still functioning (quite well) with the lower employee headcount. None of us are legally obligated to work here either. If you’re so unhappy why stay?

What they really need to do is REMOVE and REPLACE all the shop directors.

They are ALL Nepotism and good old boys, I sure hope them CN boys figure it out once they take over UPRR

God bless you Sir! The way you put it is simple, straight and to the point. It should be the way you said it. Proper processes, that don't change yearly or monthly; followed by all; taking the time to do things right, even if it slows down the operation...because not doing it right will slow it down even more down the road.

For me, what is going on at UP today...and it has happened in the past as well...has to do with lack of Christianity and morals.

Lance Fritz, and more importantly the board members...and yes, they reflect society to a great extent... are not true Christians. A real, strong, compassionate Christian man or woman would not hack off employees to the bone to boost a share price. Wouldn't destroy a mechanical shop that is doing good work!

No regulations, politicians, or anything will change that until we all change, from top to bottom, and do things in a Christian manner.
