From what I understand Mattel is not laying anyone off. Employees are treated like sh-- till they can't take it anymore and leave. Especially at the distribution centers. Just think of how much they save if you don't get severance or unemployment.

Lay-off is on going. I was shocked when they gave us the bonus check this year. We have bonus even the company is not performing well. I took it just like everybody else. Deep inside I feel guilty about it. The money could have used to save other people’s job.
Basicly at the end of each quarter there is layoff risk as Mattel desperately tries to cost reduce their way to financial stability. Of course in the long run this type of strategy will only end up destroying the company, but in the short run it extends the party at bit longer so the executives can continue to line their pockets with cash.
Layoffs are planned for next month. Management needs to hit a larger dollar amount with these cuts than has been shared publicly or shared internally beyond the fifteenth floor. It will be ugly.
