Thread regarding General Electric Co. layoffs

Remember when we used to refer people to work at General Electric?

You know, that nearly forgotten time when we actually used to like working here and thought it was a good place for other people to join as well. These days, all I do is warn people away if they are even considering GE as a possible workplace.

How about the rest of you? What are the chances you'll still refer somebody to work here?

Over the past few years I’ve had to hire a couple managers and thought about some great talented folks I knew from other companies in the area. Each time I thought to myself, no I would not bring that person here. This is sad but true. Every other time I switched companies I tried to bring my best folks with me.

A lot of people were uncertain as to what was an “appropriate” permissive time off to take. Some managers advised their teams to just continue taking whatever time they would have been entitled to under the previous time off policy. That guidance seemed simple enough, and fair and equitable. However, in the “always on” GE culture, many employees have continued to work excessively long days, weekends, holidays, and some vacations too. It is not a surprise that the permissive time off policy is called by many “unlimited un-vacation.”

Taking 18 weeks off is unfair and grossly abusive in many different ways.

I would have been entitled to 5 weeks under the old system, but I took off less than three weeks last year under the "unlimited" system. A lot of long service people are scared to take their time off now, and GE profits from them. There are enough of them to make up for the 18 week shirkers, which definitely exist.

Taking 18 weeks of permissive time off should be grounds for dismissal, for the abuser and the manager granting it. If this is prevalent, GE will collapse sooner than later.

I remember when GE didn't have to advertise a single job opening. Used to have signs by the doors flat out telling you to not even ask if they were offering the test. You had to do well on the test first, then hope you scored high enough to get a call over the next several months. Then if you got hired, they usually hired 3 people for every open position and then would eliminate the extra hires until only the best were left. It's not like that anymore. I remember seeing the first advertisement that GE was hiring, posted in the papers easily 15 years ago and knew that wasn't a good sign. Didn't know how right I was back then.

GE is a club for socialites now. Barbie and Ken get promoted to the top instantly. All the new folks take 18 weeks vacation on average. So to the OP, yeah people still recommend GE to their friends. It is an all out party. Nonstop team building events going to the ball games or being on vacation. Most these folks even use the GE T&L to get best rates and just rent cars on GE too. Why buy your own cell phone when you can just use the GE issued one.

There are generations of freeloaders in a precious photograph frame. They just ran an article on that a few weeks ago. Best part is they actually believe they are talented and superior.

So yes it is easier than ever to get on with GE. Where else can you pretend work without any accountability at all. I guess other large companies are the same. Essentially approaching communism in a weird way.

By the time the C-suite gets done ruining the company, there will be nowhere for you to refer anyone to.
