Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

Engineers leaving GM

Three product engineers have given their two week notice for greener pastures in our group, this month. How many have left your group after the layoffs?

So I survived, moved on to another group in Finance last year. Only to report to the most dysfunctional manager ever. I knew my time at GM was limited when I was beginning to get frustrated with the culture over there, and was seeing more and more people I really work for and with leave GM! Soon, my time will also come and I cannot wait to send that resignation letter over. GM is not a good place to work.

I quit recently.

Went to a startup and had to take a 35K base increase, better bonus and even a sign on bonus.

My boss at GM tried to counteroffer but HR r----ds said that they would never pay a developer what the competitor was offering, hence, I am gone.

My recommendation:

Leave the f--- out! there are beautiful startups in Detroit that offer much better compensation and the work itself is better.

Never in my career have I known so many colleagues who were actively looking for work.

Granted, it might just be that people are now talking about looking for work where they were hush-hush previously. I suspect not considering their comments that mad management and seeing good colleagues get screwed in layoffs are significant factors.

Vehicles ARE going to get worse. There is no question about it.

In November, Mark Reuss showed everyone the engineering spending bar chart. GM's GOAL is to be among the lowest spenders on engineering.

Make no mistake, ALL of Mary's eggs are in the autonomous & electric basket to the tune of $2 BILLION per year. That's money that is not going into everyday vehicles.

Autonomous Yugos is where GM is headed. If it survives that long.

If all GM's best engineers were laid off or are leaving, the cars they make are going to get even c-appier than they were before.

Who would want to waste their money on those rattling death traps?

I would love too, I'd rather walk dogs than work for these pricks.

Between April 1 and now, 6 developers left my IT org of about 80 people. Four were senior and took lots of knowledge with them. Another fulfilled senior duties but was actually a 2017 college hire.

I'm a mid-level engineer and will be leaving June 3. My last day was actually 5/10, my manager just doesn't know it yet. Currently taking the family for a nice 2-week vacation to use up the rest of my vacation days.

I've already typed up my immediate resignation letter which will go out morning of June 3. I got an offer with another company for a senior role in Colorado - the place my wife and I always planned to retire.

That's great they're able to find something else. I've been struggling to find another job. I'm getting interviewed but no job offers.
