Thread regarding Sears layoffs

Plenty of applications still coming in

I have to admit, the fact that we are still receiving applications for jobs on nearly daily bases is pretty astounding to me.

I thought this was a time of great economy with plenty of available jobs. If that's the case, why is anybody wanting to join this mess? Do people not read? Do they not know what's been happening?

One thing Sears has as a retail job is they open a tad later and close earlier than Target. Plus you don’t have as many customers. Other than that it’s just standard retail fodder.

Some Kmarts can be pretty busy. At its worst Sears never has the 3 registers and 15 people in line with carts of small stuff.

3-4 people in line while you mess around with a return is far better than 10. Most of them leave after waiting that long.

As a store manager I get a lot of applications. About 60 percent Thai I scheduled interviews for show up for an interview and about 40 percent of offers I make get accepted. Of those about 50 percent actually start. 10 percent make it to 90 days.

Plenty of people apply but then don't bother showing up. Happens all the time at my Kmart and I do live in a rural area where it is hard to get a job, so even in an area where people are desperate for work they don't want a job from this hellhole of a company.

In my more rural area we pay quite a bit more than the prevailing rate of pay, so this makes perfect sense.

I venture to say that most of those applications are made by people going through the motions with unemployment by searching for a job, with no intention on ever working there. Until last year, I was one of the hiring managers at a Sears store. I could tell when somebody was going through the motions to get their UI, as they would not act professional or put together during the interview. I had one guy literally show up in sweatpants and a severely wrinkled button up shirt, untucked, to the interview. Another interviewee was kind of rude and aggressive. They purposely flub the interviews since the unemployment office only goes as far as confirming whether or not they showed up to the interview. They don't ask about behavior, dress, hygiene, or anything else. It happened more often than not.

I could see why it would be so difficult to get a legit applicant who genuinely wanted to work for Sears.I know it was for me. The ironic and funny thing is was that I was looking for my escape as I desperately tried to bring people in, to very little avail. It was increasingly difficult to "sell" the job to a serious prospect as the pay, the benefits and the company's future was severely wanting, and it sounds like it still is. I was very upfront with pay, the kinds of hours they'd expect, etc. since it would be a waste of time and a disservice to both of us to exaggerate, something another hiring manager liked to do (and wondered why her hires were quitting in less than two weeks).

It’s just a job... not a career. In some states, you must apply for jobs ( and provide proof) in order to receive unemployment.

Other than current/former associates, no one cares about Sears or its current situation.
