Asking for a raise

Is it common for employees to negotiate raises or is the PMP process the only way to get one?

Instead focus on delivering what your boss wants as a means to improving your PMP rating - this is the main variable in the in Pay Determination Tool you can impact.

I get a raise everyday— taking that elevator ride up to the 43rd floor. Thing is, I take the same elevator down to the lobby at the end of the day. It’s a wash.

Asking for a raise? Get a ladder. Truth is you’ll get whatever they decide to give you, else, you know where the door is.

Best chance of getting a raise is during the initial hiring/offer process. Negotiate for raise and PSG after receiving initial offer and doing your research. Very hard to get a raise by asking for one later.

I’ve asked for a raise every year and justified why I deserved it. I made that known to my boss and department manager at least twice a year and at the appropriate time. I’d say I’ve been successful 7 of 10 times in getting a better than average raise each year.

I have not heard of direct requests being successful... but I am sure it has happened. More commonly you would tell your boss, and, depending on the curcumstances, the next report up, that you fell unfairly compensated along with any particulars that might support that notion. If they agree they might push for your advance next round. Other than that you might need a competing offer in hand, and even then, without a very compelling case, you should expect to just jump to advance rather than expecting to leverage up. They have a strong vested interest in not allowing abnormal advances.
