Thread regarding Bed Bath & Beyond layoffs

Red flag for full timers

In my district, (I can't speak for other districts), they are pushing for all full timers to schedule ALL of their vacation AND paid holidays now, other wise it would be scheduled for them.

Put two and two together? They're trying to minimize all full timers vacation, so when the time comes to do another massive layoff, they won't have to pay off all of these accrued vacation and paid holidays all at once, like they did to the dept managers.

Anyone else's store or district doing this?

They always do this so the ones that are in the inner circle can have holidays, yes that’s right they did get to take off at Christmas and thanksgiving! The real mules were used to get the work done.

They have been doing this for as long as BBBY has owned CTS. Its nothing new. But I do not think they are done laying off people. As long as this powerstruggle is going on at the Board they will continue layoffs because they are stuck in the past. Even Walmart sees the value in their seinor employees and the value in treating employees right. BBBY has never seen the value of their employees beyond how much they pay them and how many can they cut to make the bottom line look better. Lets not focus on experance and knoweldge. Just keep bringing in new people who are gone the next day or next month. Who cares they are only getting minimum.

Lets not focus on the regional managers who keep a strangle hold on what they allow the store managers and planning managers to do.

And can we teach the planning employees to do their job instead of throwing what they do away and writing a truck up by yourself.

Nobody learns that way.

So it starts with a board that has lost all touch with todays retail market and how to treat their employees. Its made worse by a CEO who could Run things better but is afraid of the Board. Which trickles down to corporate then store level and finally your Customers. Who dont like the higher prices and different Merchandise you are pusshing on them in the CTS and that stores.

We as employees are susposed to greet every customer as if they are our guest. Ask if they need help. Offer a cart. Be friendly.

Is it to much to ask for the same respect back from the Corporate level on up.

When they visit our stores they dont act like they care about us. We are a tool to get something done. And guess what. Theres plenty of tools out there to replace you as an employee.

Corporate people dont greet customers. I watch it everytime they are in my store. They walk by everybody. Either on the phone or intent on some checklist.

Everybodys running scared.

Change comes from the top down.

And unless things up there change.

We as employees will always be wortless and easily replaced. No matter what they say.

Actions speak louder than words.

"I think they want this done so that they don’t have full timers who have time left in December (not the time to take time off in retail) that needs to be used. We had a few who had to use time in the month of December, and I don’t mean a day or two, but rather a full week or more. I think it’s to be proactive so that stores don’t have anyone slip by that needs to use their time. They won’t get rid of full timers. They do know that they need a certain amount to function. They are trying to make business decisions, but they are complete id--ts."

Complete agreement here other than the id--ts part, poor business decisions without a doubt.

The vacation time being allocated sooner than later is actually quite common as you suggested; the full timers being entirely laid off is not what's in the best interest of their business plan, including the fact that there needs to be some sort of knowledge base at the store level.
