I was laid off last month from UP and as far as I can see the job market is tough. I would like that people that found new jobs after UP in the railroad business posted their experience, how tough it was, what were the challenges, how did it work out? I’m close to making a decision to try to seek my fortunes in other businesses so any info or experiences are helpful.

I’ve gotten laid off from my second job at the railroad and if I get laid off from my original starting position , I’M NOT COMING BACK!!!! I made a living for 33years outside the railroad and I’ll make it 15 more till I retire! It’ll be so long railroad and good riddance!!
it's not difficult to find another job in this economy if you have an education and skills to sell. you know what you have to do. just go do it. and best advice is like others have said get out of the railroad industry. there's more to the job market than that. if you go to another class one you will especially find yourself in the same situation.
Get away from the industry.
Its full of railbuffs and union sellouts.
Thats why as of today its a cra**y industry full of take advantage of you!
Carrier and Unions and co workers.
I heard Sir Topham Hatt is retiring. Might be an opening there.
I was laid off in February, I had 15 years as a machinist with UP, I have another 25 years as a diesel tech, there were no other railroad jobs near me and I did not want to relocate, it took 3 weeks after applying for offers, and then 2 weeks to actually start my new job as a diesel tech, advise is to apply for everything even if you don't have all the qualifications, don't give up, remember this happened for a reason- to give you a better life outside of UP
