Thread regarding Barnes & Noble layoffs

How is BN still open?!

Seriously, how does a company that fires its experienced, knowledgeable booksellers, doesn’t have bags to give out, has so few employees on the floor , customers are not being properly served, old issues of magazines still on the shelf, poor customer service ( read posts on Facebook), etc.,etc.stay in business? Who’s still shopping there?

“Do you think people interviewing for B&N positions don't do their research, like read this site and the reviews on career sites? Or are they just desperate for some cash?”

They replaced all the people they let go of last year with part-timers. They had no trouble taking the jobs. Who knows what they were promised. Some of them when they realized what it happened were sorry they took the job. So I would have to say most don’t do their homework. I would think that they think Barnes and Noble is still a decent company. Not knowing that that ship sailed along time ago.

All we talk about is how much we HATE coming to this place. Every day there’s call outs. Nobody wants to be here. There’s no incentive, no future, no plan. We just work our shifts like it’s our last. Just get through the shift and get out. Our regulars are coming in less and less. I have an interview tomorrow at a fast food restaurant. It used to be a big deal to be a Bookseller. Not anymore.

" ... and I really appreciate that the B&N staff smile"

That smile is defined as RICTUS:

Rictus - rictus is a frozen, fake smile. A fixed grimace or grin: their faces were each frozen in a terrified rictus.

I am a frequent customer of a B&N location in Pittsburgh area. Most retail is under some kind of stress these days, and I really appreciate that the B&N staff smile, are friendly and helpful in our area even with all the chaos around them. I really respect people that take pride in their work even when conditions are very difficult - and I'll really miss B&N when we lose it. I might reconsider visiting the cafe though...

"Everyone is safe".

TRUST US! REALLY! (Management laughs and says "s---ers" to its employees).

They said it when they knew before Christmas that the full timers were going. Made sure the magazines were out within 24hrs, made sure Receiving had books on carts to shelve in 24hrs. After they let them go? No longer a priority! Boxes sit in Receiving for days. New magazines sit in boxes while the old issues sit on the stands.

They will find ways to get rid of long term workers, they always do.

If you're making more than minimum, you are a target now!

Don't expect to work for B&N more than a few years. Well, with the ship sinking now, lucky if you get another year- haha.

Biggest disinformation currently is the MAY Layoff assertion.

Not gonna happen.

a) that was in some districts where the DM was too cheap to let anyone order. Most stores had bags and now that the new fiscal year has started, they should all have bags.

b) You've got to be kidding me. I'm not tipping my hat any more by giving you details but rest assured, if you give them cause (this is the important part) they will locate you. Use a VPN. Common sense.

I'm not a fan of this company. They've done reprehensible things. However, it's Best to keep a level head about these things and try not to exaggerate/spread disinformation.

In response to "So, to clear up"

You do realize this company is making customers take their purchases WITHOUT a bag, right?

They can't afford to go after anyone!

The company is on life support!!! WAKE UP!!!

So, to clear up the part where they can "find you" even on an anonymous website:

LP can and does contact website administrators when they think they have something to pursue, and if the website cooperates they'll at least have your general location, which gives them a store to focus on. If you drop enough details they will peg you.

Even though this and other sites are "anonymous" I would still recommend using a VPN, which you should be doing anyway for all your web browsing. There are some reputation subscription services that are pretty inexpensive per year. Or, if you're techy enough you can actually set up your own, but that's too difficult for most laypeople.

You managers reading this, STOP LYING TO YOUR EMPLOYEES!!

We aren't as stupid as you hope we'd be!!

They lied about the lay offs just like everything else and our District Manager is the worst at pulling the strings and trying to hide it. We know what's going on at our store.

I agree, everyone should post a review, corporate isn't going to to a damn thing. They can't. It's not legal. After the huge layoff, I went to some lawyers and asked them all about these sites and everything else.

Besides, corporate is too busy trying to save MORE money to pay for the id--t CEO's trail- hahaha!

We''ll be waiting to read the bankruptcy news.

INDEED.COM doesn't have this option to select for leaving the job in their review section:

LAID OFF

“So stop trying to scare people from telling the truth.”

In morning meetings we were told DO NOT GO ON the lay-off.com.

We were told it was full of lies, to undermine the company ,by disgruntled employees laid off last February.

What BS , I work there & its 90% true ( some of the talk of closings hasn’t happened.)

Right after Feb 2018 I asked my Mgr & he confided that There was a lot more than the reported 1800 and my Mgr said he knew about what would happen in Feb in December.

In meetings We were also told if we posted on there , they can find out who posted what.

I posted the comment about writing a review on INDEED. I am not one of the s---ers who happen to be called a "manager." They can't come after you for giving a review, it's not the same as saying c-ap about the company or people on Facebook or other social media.

So stop trying to scare people from telling the truth.

When I started working at Barnes & Noble I asked two of the café workers why they never ate there or got drinks. Mold in the ice machines that never came out. And procedures with the food. Needless to say I never eat in the café either.

They used to have this farmer's wrap that I loved but after the third or fourth time I got immediate gut stabbing pains and bowel problems I swore off cafe sandwiches forever.

It shouldn't have taken me that many tries to learn my lesson but I guess I thought it was a fluke.

"It's a shame they lowered the discount, because you are really taking your life into your own hands over there. Don't give the company back what little money they give you. Bring your lunch, it's safer and cheaper."

I rarely ate at the cafe when I worked there. I ate the occasional muffin for breakfast. But one time, they gave us a free lunch. We got to choose one sandwich and a bag of chips. After eating, I got sick 20 minutes later.

As a person who was intimately familiar with many B&N cafés for well over a decade: 95% of them are revolting. Every once in a blue moon you'd get a café Manager who would go above and beyond, work 60-70 hours a week (and work off the clock later when they became hourly employees after THE LAWSUIT over stolen wages) and it would be spotless. These people tended to burn out fast and get other jobs.

For the most part, they are gross. Machines never cleaned, baked cases never vaccumed out, nothing ever moved or swept under, ice bins never emptied and cleaned, you name it. Absolutely filthy.

It's a shame they lowered the discount, because you are really taking your life into your own hands over there. Don't give the company back what little money they give you. Bring your lunch, it's safer and cheaper.

Everyone at my store hates it. You're always running your a-- off because there aren't enough people and get nothing done. I remember we used to joke about Macy's and it's the same way here now.

"That means the cafe isn’t being cleaned either ! Wouldn’t eat in there anymore."

True.

Employees now only get a 30 percent discount as opposed to a 50 percent one. They're charging more for it, and it's even more unsanitary than it used to be because of lack of maintenance staff! Eeewwwww.

I put the word out when I was fired last year.

NONE of my family shops there anymore.

NONE of my friends shop there anymore.

2 good friends work for schools that ordered lots of books , several times a year. Not anymore.

Times that , times the number of people they really fired ( not the number they lied about) and that’s a lot of lost income for BN.

I wonder too how are they still around ?
