Thread regarding Union Pacific Corp. layoffs

Vena send message to unions with Hinkle closure!

Hinkle closure is a direct result of the failure of transportation TE&Y not cooperating with changes in yard operations. The message was if the employees don’t want to change we don’t need them. Take it as you want, his consultant WM retired CN superintendent is watching and timing everything from fast start works, lunches, breaks, finishing strong, being ready to work, and productivity. They would rather go out of the way and close a yard than deal with a culture un-willing to change.

I bet the senior MOP my shift could pull 700 cars in 8 hours if he'd allow it, we normally did 250-300 if we weren't blocked by inbounds, he says your f---ing nuts never gonna happen blah f---ing blah...723 cars that day... safely efficiently nobody hurt, k--led, anything damaged he was mind boggled checked switching performance 3 times even, I said it's f---ing amazing what railroaders do when they can rairoad instead of rehearse f---ing plays on the radio and pause for 10 minutes before getting off an engine looking both ways 600,543,899 times... this company is f---ing garbage meant to sabotage souls poor acid on hard workers spirits.. f--- them, I've been with the BNSF now for 2 years, I was with the UP for 11 years before this, starting over again on the extraboard wasnt fun of course but now I'm finally happy and proud of my company, not to mention dollar for dollar 401k matching, they let us move freight, don't hire based on graphs only on real background checks to weed out lazy douch bags, how the UP is still in business beyond me

So PSR is the Project Runway of railroading? Sorry Hinkle you are out. Best thing about all of this is watching how desperate some of these managers get trying to conform to PSR principles.

Some of the stuff mentioned in this thread is actually true. With that being said, there are things mentioned that only management would know. So I would say that if you have a workplace where the management is not on board with the leadership of the company, that is a recipe for an unproductive workplace. Looks like Vena can see through the bs and knew that the Hinkle yard was a place of people taking sides and not working together. There is one common phrase heard throughout PSR. You’re either in or you’re out. That’s goes for everyone, management included.

No one knows what exactly causes Vena to make his decision. I heard the management team defended the work force at Hinkle. At the end of the day, Hinkle wasn’t delivering results. It’s a results driven environment.

The closure at Hinkle is a direct result of management that had no clue wtf was going on when Vena quizzed them on why they were holding trains on the mainline.

TE&Y was and is doing their part to try to make it work.

A number of people who self-identified as UP agreement/craft employees said, on this website and elsewhere, that they had no intention of going along with PSR and the related changes. There was talk of "laying down" and "walking out" and even going on strike.

Unions have also blocked other changes, mostly related to PTC, drones, or other applied technologies that would have made America look a little less like a third world country. The protectionist union Luddites forced the hand of senior management. They also continue to hurt their cause by voting against their own interests (almost all lean Republican).

Here is the reality: technology is evolving and will (unlike entitled old union sobs) continue to evolve. American railroads, with their crucial role in the global supply chain, cannot afford to put off adapting to appease a small number of aging workers who share a collective sense of entitlement that rivals established royalty.

Your downvotes tell me that I'm correct and you don't know how to deal with it.

This is definitely where we are going. This is just a short term problem solver. The next big problem will be hiring people from a population base that base no trust in U.P. A perfect situation for union contract negotiations. When all the coal sanctions are lifted by the end of 2020 coal will be back in a big way and then there will be sheer panic to hire and get trains moving.

I’ll cry about wages if I want bud. I live in America! I did agree to work for for these wages the way things were two decades ago not the way things are now. So I will continue to work safely I mean very safe and I will continue to complain cuz I can.

Don’t cry about wages. You agreed to do the job for what you’re paid. So do your job.

Example: This is where we’re going. You are welcome to come along, if you choose not to come along we’ll get someone who will.

I am not changing. I won’t work harder without compensation such as a raise, bonus or items of value to motivate me to work harder. Money motivated I don’t understand why these guys can’t figure this out spread the wealth and watch the productivity increase greatly. This place doesn’t pay enough anymore for anyone to worry much about getting the anyway. You can’t keep cutting benefits and giving poor wage increases and expect your employees to want go the extra mile. Not me I’ll keep up the safe pace and find a new job in the Trump economy if they close my yard down.

I heard the same thing. Lack of urgency caused it to close. This starts at the top and spreads downward. Isn’t all the employees fault and the management has implemented so many safety rules it’s hard to work faster
