Cashing out pension when being laid off

I was laid off several months ago. I'm wondering if anyone has as well? In the QTD resources there was a section about whether or not you could cash out your pension with a link to the benefit resource center that would show you what your current pension was at if cashed out. That way you could see if you qualified. I even asked in a lay off conference like call and was sent the link. I saved screen shots but was on medical leave my last few days of employment so I never printed them.

After the fact I call the resource center and 3 people on 3 different calls said nope! You can never cash out pension until you retire. Anybody notice this?

My office was one of the many shut down and closed in 2018. We were NOT offered a pension buy out.

Freezing pension wouldn’t hurt with attracting new talent, they don’t really care about a pension. Freezing pension would leave to more talent bleed of current employees that have options.

3 years is better than 1 year. No pension will make attracting and keeping talent more challenging.

Can’t edit previous reply. My bad, I thought you were referring to the 401k, not the pension. I haven’t heard of being able to cash out the pension.

You can cash out, but there is a substantial penalty. You can transfer to another 401k without penalty. Otherwise, you can’t touch it until retirement age. Not sure what the exact age is.

You can roll over your 401K to another company, but you can not voluntarily cash out the Pension. That being said, there have been buy-out offers made to people who have left in the past. The people that I know who received the offers said that the offers were pennies on the dollar and they refused the buy-out.
