Three new hires at my company, two guys that worked at Walmart one that used to work at Target claim that their former companies were worse place to work than Lowe’s. You can tell how happy they are with their job, and you can’t fake that. Is it the case that they just haven’t seen everything that’s going on yet, or are other companies really worse employers than Lowe’s?

Lowes is (soon going to be was) my first job and it honestly scares me for whats to come down the road for more jobs
I took recieving because it sounded the easiest, just put boxes on a pallet and take it out. The pay wasnt great but it was the only place that accepted me so I took it. I liked it for the first week or 2, people i worked with were cool to talk to, then it slowly turned into a slip n slide of sh-t. Theyd expect too much work of you, like staying overtime just to do nightcrew thing and disperse the pallet, or downstock ALL of tools with the people working at tools but then they all dip out so now its the three people that didnt want to be here doing all of their sh-t. Having things such as whole power washers, sawhorse clamps, and butcher blocks fall on you, AND I GET MADE FUN OF FOR IT! Funniest sh-t is making fun of the person for having the same thing happen to them, but youre considered rude for some reason. Ive had 4 sets of butcher blocks fall ontopn my ankle, and now i dont feel the bump anymore. The water cooler makes my stomach turn. The back of the semi truck is a fu----g oven more than anything else. Needing management to HOPEFULLY come to the back because we dont have any forklift certified people.
I really see why people now starting to hate working, at first I thought they were all lazy, but this sh-t is ridiculous. I shouldnt feel like i have to hurt somebody or even myself because of how horrid my experience is there. Thered a lot more things i could say like neve getting a break but thatd be a lot, so yeah, fu-k lowes, hope it burns down.
Yesterday, Dec. 26, 2022, day after Christmas, was a pretty horrible day to work and shop in the Lowes store in Central NC, more specifically, the Triangle, that I work at. Firstly, it’s freezing inside the store so that we have to wear our winter clothing inside! The management have not been running the heat, it’s not broken, but rumor has it the temp is controlled by corporate. Huh? The break room was so cold that my fingers were almost numb by the end of my meal. Secondly, the number of bi---y, whiny, me-first, I’m more important than the other customer and self-entitled acting child -adults and impatient customers was excessive. Patience is a virtue that society in general has lost, but at Lowe’s it is on full display. Also there were Clearly a number of people that got coal for Christmas, and so what better place, than a therapist , to take out your problems on someone than on an employee at Lowes. I saw a guy at customer service so mad about his order or refund, which is a daily occurrence, that I thought he was gonna go over the counter at the employee and I was ready to call 911 (which would’ve cost me my job, because at Lowe’s we cannot do that only a manager can for any reason, even for shoplifters). Thirdly, the excessive Skelton crew that is scheduled to work, and departments like plumbing with no associate scheduled to work in it, has reached a boiling point and many of the folks I work with are actively seeking another job. Yes, plumbing customers , you are on your own, it is a do-it-yourself department, and so hire a plumber and don’t bi--h to any red vest associate that you can find about getting help with your toilet seat or your plumbing issues, call corporate and bi--h to them that you cannot get help and that you cannot afford a plumber. Lowes has decided to run their plumbing departments this way. Fourthly, Lowes safe is a big joke, by extension of reason above, and so the Lowes Director of Safety is a big joke too. Do employees a favor, CEO Marvin, and tell Hank thank you for your service but we don’t need a safety director any longer. It’s a huge slap in the face in every single store day-in and day-out, to the hard working associates that have to pull large items off those damn metal shelves and are not able to find another assoc. to help them and then to have to hear to those damn safety announcements overhead, and to watch Hanks smiling face making his wise cracks in the App4me videos, that we have to watch weekly, and then have to pull heavy stuff down by ourselves all the time. In store pick up, God help you, knows this better than most as y’all are being timed to pull lazy shoppers orders. Lastly, the Lowes Myredvest, Genesis, ISST(especially) selling systems are absolute Cr-p and the Lowe’s executive leadership should be ashamed of themselves, assuming that they have any shame, for not investing more in better software programs. It is clear that none of the executive leadership spends any time working in a store and experiencing any of the headaches and heartaches that Lowes employees and customers experience in a daily basis. Instead, Marvin must surely be surrounded by a bunch it yes men and that he doesn’t receive actual boots on the ground intelligence about how poorly the store are doing and how much more revenue they could be earning. Crazy is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. That is what a Lowe’s business model seems to run on. Finally if anyone is still reading, the grand old state of NC has a motto: to be rather than to seem. Lowes Home Improvement in my honest opinion after many years working there operates on the opposite motto: to seem rather than to be. A lot of good news about what Lowes does for the community, etc, etc, is harped about by Marvin weekly on our Lowes employee page when we log in. None of that matters when your first priority to Customers and associates and the service in Lowes stores is such a disaster. Thank you for reading.
Chernobyl?
Convicts don't want to be in Lowes
Lowes is worse! It will be ok for maybe the first few days after that and seeing how management is you will run! They keep the ones who don’t do much and kiss bu-t. If you don’t kiss bu-t it’s not the place for you
Lowes is cr---y. Especially if you have horrible asms. Mine bullies me. Let’s everyone get away with things but me I get threatened to be wrote up. I was doing training on the computer while everyone else is laughing and watching videos on there phones next me asm walks in catches me texting and takes a pic of me and walks out. The other co workers were shocked he did that to me. Im sure it’s some kind of tactic to write me up or fire me. Been there 2 years. He is a bully. He brags about firing people. I will quit before I let them have the satisfaction of firing me
Lowe's is the worst.
Lowes is horrible. some asm are nice, but we had two that everybody hated. yes, hate. i got called back to the office and written up for something i didn't do. i got called back again and that asm was a LIAR. she said i was talking to another associate about my write up. NO. i was written up saturday and that man works 12 to 4 mon thru friday and my shift started 4 on monday. he's a vet, been there 20 years? i never saw the man. i know him. he is NOT a gossip. she told another employee that i was talking about her and i was NOT. that girl confronted me in the parking lot, told me, i need to not talk about her or there are going to be problems. i ask who said that. wouldn't say. i know it was that asm. she said i was telling all the new people that this asm was "mean". lol. mean! lol. she's worse than mean. i didn't do that. leave nasty notes on the desk right in your face. everybody i worked with saw that. next time i got called back, i told her she better have proof of things she's accusing me before she calls me back here anymore. doesn't matter because you can't get those write ups off of ya. you can't. lowes employee relations is only there for lowes. they listen to what's going on and decide whether it impacts lowes or not. that's all they care about. managers will go along with asm. nobody has your back. i got tired when i came in, the young ones took off. where were they? i ans all the calls, took care of people in the store and took all the request from the front desk. i was the only one they saw because i was where i was supposed to be, on the floor, in my department. i was written for no call no show. but, i did call in. the asm said no, she didn't. it was one of the ones that everybody hates that was there that day. i worked all weekends, holidays and my birthday. i got one weekend off and my previous manager had to manipulate the schedule to do that. 4th of july, 2nd year i had to work it, i cried. i'd had enough. i quit. and to write me up and they read that in corporate. that's my reputation there. it's a cr---y company to work for. there's no training. i would not recommend lowes at all. home depot i hear is better. high turnover at lowes. i lasted 15 months. nasty nasty management. they don't care about YOU. that despicable asm wrote me up for having carts. well, i zone.
As unhappy as I am with what Lowe's has progressively become. I can say without a doubt YES there's a worse job than Lowe's.
Try working in rent-to-own/repo industry. Very shady business.
I briefly worked for Rent-a-center before I moved on. Worst 6 months of my life. In the time I was there I had 2 g-ns and a kn--e pulled on me when trying to get back furniture and a television. You get dispatched to suspicious areas by yourself without any protection. My supervisor tried to threaten me with a write up for not getting the items back. I threatened to call the EEOC. Needless to say I wasn't long for that place, once a better job came along I was out of there.
I worked at Lowe's for six months as a cashier. It might've been tolerable for longer if a) I had never agreed to cover fifteen minutes at the service desk[if you do it once they'll make you do it all the time], b) it hadn't been during the pandemic, c) if you could actually get help when you need it, and d) if the technology wasn't cr-p. The register system is from the 80s, online ordering and regular ordering are disconnected, and good luck ever getting someone to help out customers with their heavier items. I would have to make calls over the intercom repeatedly, get told off by managers for using the intercom, and then get told off by customers because apparently it was my fault that nobody came out to help them while I was busy with an impossibly long line of customers. The lady who managed our online orders left a sticky note at her station saying that she felt like the band on Titanic, still playing as the ship went down.
On top of that, the customers expect you to know everything about every department, and think that if they say "you work in customer service, you should know everything!" is magically going to help the situation. You're also forced to answer the phones while doing returns, and some phone customers will tell you their freaking life story before getting to what they're calling about. I had customers get mad at me because I wasn't listening to their monologue because I was also doing a return for a customer who didn't have a receipt. I've even had my managers come up while I was talking to a customer on the phone and push the button to hang up on the customer while I was talking to them. The worst and most demoralizing part of all of it was that I wanted to do my best and help customers, but most of the time there was nothing I could do except call for help that I knew would never come.
Lowe's is a terrible place to work. They are always looking for ways to withhold vacations and bonus money. Through the years they have taken more bonus money from employees. They give you bonus money but find ways to limit what you get. They still have to pay upper management right?
I almost get myself beaten up switching from walmart to lowes, wow. No I prefer Walmart.
I have worked many retail jobs in my past (cashiering at supermarkets, stockboy at Walmart and many other low-paying retail jobs, and with certainty, I can say they are all bad in their own ways. But having worked at lowes many years now, I believe Lowes is worst. First of all, when I go to Walmart and ask questions (assuming you find anyone to ask it to), usually employees don't know much ad nobody cares. it's different at Lowes. If you are stopped at Lowes and trust me, you'll be stopped and asked questions for every step you take, you better know or find someone that does know (so here comes more footwork and putting you're on work on hold. The heavy lifting alone makes it worst for me. Cinderblocks, mulch, heavy boxes of tiles, sheds, toilets, and 50lbs to 80lbs of concrete bags that you might have to lift (depending on your job and department). Then there's cutting blinds, tile, wood... etc. I never had to worry about any of that at Walmart. So logically, Lowes is harder in terms of physicality. Plus, like Walmart or target, our turnover rates will make your head spin, Managers come and go like farts and they usually stink like them, too (sorry, I couldn't resist. LOL). Yes, I'm bitter, but it truly does s— more, especially in those terms. My point is... all these jobs will abuse you, but Lowes and Home Depot will have you lifting heavy c-ap until you're broken (and it gets harder and harder, the longer you're there, to find anyone who is willing to help you lift). Customers at Lowes expect something that doesn't... no cant exist with that small amount of training and pay. Lastly, at Walmart, we got our breaks daily. Not the case so much at Lowes. Just my 2cents, tho. peace. for me, for almost the same pay, id rather for go the back breaking c-ap.
Why do Lowe’s managers let some employees get away with everything and hammer on the hard dependable workers. Buddying up (other words apply) to the store manager will get you further than working your tail off!
For me Kmart was worse than Lowe’s. A lot depends upon who your managers are some are nice, others are real d—s.
I worked at a sears selling appliances and mattresses for 3 years and closed my store down when it went bankrupt. I now work at lowes selling appliances believe me lowes is worse. I used to complain about sears and fast eddies metrics and sale quotas because I knew he was hurting the company. I literally work part time 4-5 hours a night 5 days a week. WORST JOB ever ! I look at my watch thinking it’s almost time to leave that c-appy place and wow I’ve only been there like 2 hours. No pay for how hard you work and most of the customers are rude, demanding and cheap. I so wish I had my sears job back :(
Give them a month? Many at my store don’t even make it that long. We have cashiers that don’t come back from lunch their first day on the register.
Was terminated from Lowe’s beacause as a customer on their customer receipts I gave them several bad surveys. They tracked my receipt to find out who made the survey and found it grounds for termination. Way to treat Seniors and veterans Lowe’s. I didn’t say anything that wasn’t true
I won't say whether it is worse or better, but I have spent 22 years in retail and retail management I've worked for major competitors to lowes and the fear of having to start over yet once again at the age of 51 scares the hell out of me.
I come to work every day and give a 110% of myself. I have also learned in my life that stressing and worrying about things that may or may not even happen just takes away from your own personal happiness.
Watch your receipts veterans. Make sure you get 10% discount. Prices are 10% higher than Menard & Home Depot. People don't matter to Lowes family. At one time I wouldn't shop at anywhere else but now I would not go to Lowes period. I'm a ripped off veteran by Lowes.
No, Lowes is the WORST.
EVERY single person that has been fired (usually unjustly) or quit, is happier and doing better in their lives. I have always followed up, and this success rate is 100%.
You cant compare other retail jobs. Thats like asking whose sh-- smells the worst. And I would questions anyones intelligence who leaves Lowes for another retail job and vice versa. They are all the same. If one s---s, they all s---. And they all do! But if you want to put whipped cream on dog sh-- be my guest.
If you have a care free manager, Lowe's can be tolerable. But it wont last. Managers come and go like the wind, and they change sh-- up constantly. You will be pulled in 100 directions simultaneously, and never satisfying management no matter what you do. The best customer service will go unnoticed, and customers wont appreciate it. You'll bust your a-- for what? a .20 cent annual raise?
All Lowe's wants is more, more, more. Its never enough. And under this tyrant Marvin with no direction, or intelligence who is only concerned about his own salary and bonuses, its gotten 100x worse.
Ive been applying and interviewing out of Lowes, and so should all of you. They do not deserve anyone with values - ambition, intelligence, drive, etc, They deserve mo--ns who dont want to do a damn thing that only say "yes", then never accomplish the task anyway.
Can confirm, Sears is far worse. Working at Sears is just depressing. Lowe's is starting to feel similar to the beginning of the end of Sears.
Sears, Kmart, and Wal-Mart are worse.
Twelve years ago I worked full time at Walmart and part time at Lowe's. Lowe's at the time was actually a great place to work (of course there were occasionally bad days and bad managers, but overall it was a great experience). Lowe's offered me full time and I was happy to take it. But the past couple years Lowe's has become a terrible place to work, and it is getting worse under Marvin. Employees are no longer valued at Lowe's, and Marvin wants a cheaper and part time workforce. And store management has become worse as Marvin directs them to cut hours and beat us harder. God Bless.
currently....probably not
I’ve had multiple people quit to go back to Walmart once they realized all of the heavy lifting, lack of coverage, no increase in pay for power equipment...
Give them about a month....and then see what they say.
