So, how long will it take before things go back to normal? Before the entire merger thing is behind us and we can once again focus on doing our jobs instead of worrying about layoffs, firings, pay cuts, and whatnot?
I'll admit, I'm already really tired of this. The idea of this possibly lasting for years is definitely not appealing.

If you are bothered that much and don't have a lot to lose I would leave as soon as possible. Once the layoffs start there will be more competition on the streets for jobs. You will have Anadarko and other ex-employees from companies out looking for some of the same jobs. If you are long-time APC I would just sit back and wait for the severance because it would be hard to walk away from the Change of Control policy if it is still in place. Where I work we have been hiring over the last three years pretty steady, but I can tell you the competition for jobs is very competitive and many resumes come in. It seems the best way to get a job is to know someone in the prospective company that can push you along the process. Also, if you are a technical person on the science side a masters degree has become the new bachelors. At this time of year also add in all the recent graduates.
Get used to it as this is normal. This has certainly been the story with APC (now Chevron) over the past four years, but it seems to have escalated due to the CVX takeover. It s---ed getting laid off back in March 2016, but I'm sure thankful for it now as I've sinced moved on and away from the oil and gas industry. Never again. Nada. Hell f---ing no. But at least I was able to skate every parking garage within a 1/4 mile radius!

You do realize that layoffs tend to peak between Thanksgiving and Christmas. That should give you a starting point for your assimilation timeline into Chevron.
I spent 30 years in the oil industry and this is normal.
