ASTLs external hires

Has anyone else noticed more ASTLs hired from Walmart and Target? What happened to promoting from within?

They love the "yes men" who speak the corporate tongue--"moving forward with a sense of urgency to take ownership of mentoring and developing through challenges and opportunites"....etc....

As long as your a "yes" man, they'll love you. A no-personality whippersnapper was hired in as TL for Grocery at Devon/Wayne (still there). He was chosen because he'd worked with the ASTL at the time (female). Kids a real A-hole! Constantly harrassed tm's from the get go and a lot of the guys either were fired or quit. Heck even ones in his boys club left because they didn't like his antics. He used to love to creep up on people. I wished he'd do it on those nights I was feeling froggy, but he never did. They (the even-worse STL ) say he's doing a good job, yet very few in the store like him! He got lucky because the department finally looks good for one reason-OTS and the new procedures. So yes, you can be an A-hole, not liked by the majority of your store, green and still make it at WFM!

The job isn't worth it anymore. The pay gap between tl and atls is minimal now. Pay range is below or slightly above a top rate TL while being salaried. At our store our Store leadership is working more than 55 hours a week. Why would you give up a 40 hour a week job with less responsibilities for barely more money.

Over ten years with the company, and I couldn't agree more: our culture is different. You can tell the difference in a store with leadership that walks the walk, lives the lifestyle and believes in the mission: the morale is high and TMs communicate that feeling to customers. It becomes a true community and customers come to the store to share the energy. Sometimes I wonder if hiring these outsiders who don't give a damn is a subversive move to break up a group of people who are actively anti big pharma and gmo.

In my 7 years with the company, and over 15 ASTLs, only maybe 5 or 6 were from promotions. not to be "that guy", but we truly do have a different culture than other places, where the only effective leaders have been just that, leaders. Other companies want a manager, someone to delegate tasks and focus on numbers. Stores with the best morale have leadership that hits the floor, and is willing to work side by side with team members, even if the team members don't necessarily want that.

It’s not worth it anymore. No one wants to move up. The hourly rate and bonus structure are a joke now. The demands for STL/ASTL are too high.

Pretty sure there’s talk of Amazon purchasing Target.

I've got no problem with hires from those companies provided they prove they are a good culture fit and good worker. If they have the experience start them at TL and let them prove themselves. Having someone start as an ASTL is bad for morale. Besides, labor is too tight to have more management types who can't front shelves or help run a register.

Truth. But not impressed with the Walmart and Target hires I've experienced, either. They dont know anything about what we sell and act like they are too good to do any work. Pretty much seem like they are the rejects from those companies? If wfm would invest in some actual leadership training maybe we could grow the talent we have and stop cultivating the parasites.

Promoting from within is the problem with the company. Too many friends and family have been promoted without brains or experience....thus the incompetence that is Whole Foods Market. Get some experience in Leadership positions and you may get some problems solved.
