Do we wait until after severance or should we file right away?

I was told to File in March 1.
File right away to get the process going. The will take into account your severance, etc. to calculate the start date.
We're still officially paid until end of month. I think it's against the law to claim unemployment while you're still officially receiving a paycheck.
Question I don't know is what about severance.
