Can you negotiate salary

Post track, was walked out at WTC today

Started 2014 - 6a - 75k

Walked out 2019 6b - 88k

I’m looking at salaries from earlier threads that I clearly wasn’t getting as high raises as others.

Did others negotiate every year or just take what was given like I did. I feel like I dropped the ball

Didn't negotiate when I received. However, I did negotiate/discuss level changes with my boss in the time period before raised were issued. Even going so far as to apply for higher level jobs elsewhere to get the bump from 6 to 7 for staying where I was. Also, the more levels you bump up the better your raises can be. I higher in to a 6/7 level job where they had to bring me in as a6 from the outside but basically paid me the same rate as a 7tt

H level would. Then as I went from 6bto 6a then 7b and 7a I got pretty good bumps. Base pay started at 56 and is now 133, over 23 years. Almost half of that increase has been in the last 10 years.

You'll need to aim lower as far as salary is concerned, since GM tends to overpay for everything, especially salaries.

I never negotiated.

One thing I wasn't sure about on those post about salary, is were those "base salaries" or total including bonus.

GM salary is indeed exceptional. Several years ago, when GM went through some layoffs, several of their financial folks applied for jobs at our university. Their salaries were quite high compared to what we could offer. In fact, they were so out of line, with the benefits of cars and the like, that beyond a "coffee conversation", the reality was, their salary structure was beyond what a mid-size university could pay. I heard from a couple of the applicants later on that they had secured positions with a couple of GM auto suppliers, but at a substantially lower salary.

I'm in my 50's now and I've never tried to negotiate a yearly increase. Managers don't have much control of those numbers. My largest increases have been when I changed companies. I've worked for several suppliers for the first 20 yrs of my career. Go nice increases when I moved from company to company. I've been with GM the past 12 yrs. Reasonable increases, but I went in with a nice salary so I am happy. A couple years ago my manager gave me the wrong yearly increase form. It was for a colleague who was the same age but had worked for GM since college. He was making significantly less than me for doing the same work. It really pays to move around - especially early in your career.

Pay bands are quite wide and encompass a variety of tasks and qualifications.

You can't compare a 6 to a 6, need to compare responsibilities.

Watch what you wish for when it comes to salary. All you are doing is slapping a giant bullseye on your back for down the line. GM's compensation levels are ridiculously high which is what helped get them into this predicament.

For those making those levels of income, practice gratitude. There are many others in the workforce who have more education and skill, yet are making a fraction of GM pay.

At least in the software area, people tend to change job 3-4 years to get a larger salary increase than the anually salary increase. Besides, you should take risks in your twenties and should jump ship long time ago.

Well in 5 years you went down a level some how... 6A is higher than 6B... maybe that was a problem?
