Ride Sharing and Ride hailing as a way of the Future??

I heard that GM wants to get into more of "services" .. like ride sharing and ride hailing ,instead of engineering and selling products. Ummm.. hasn't this been done before? I always just called them .. taxis/Uber.. dirty, nasty, expensive.. how can a $50,000 autonomous vehicle be more cost effective than a $5,000 old cop car recycled into a taxi/Uber? Also, this sounds familiar... companies make big changes and say "we are realigning for the future.. " only to revert back to their original way of business 5-7 years later.
