Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

Is GM still too heavy?

So with all these cuts, is GM still too heavy personnel wise?

I look at DRE's that have 1 or 2 components that they're releasing and I can't understand how that fills up 40 hours of their week. I mean, the supplier is doing all the work and the DRE is basically running a meeting (many can't tell you what in detail their part does) and trying to stay on top of the supplier deliverables (and honestly there's a bunch of other engineers that are prodding the supplier to get things done anyway ) - so again, are there still more DREs than needed?

Are there other groups like that?

This is my personnel opinion

GM has way too many level 8s, from my experience (5 years at GM) those people are mostly out of touch and resist any change or process improvements.

There are some odd balls here and there, but mostly overrated in general.

All the talk level 8s targeted for cuts and free car program getting axed is all just talk. Company takes care of higher ups up to manager level. Levels 7, 6 and 5 are expendable. Funny thing is why do they need so many managers and directors after getting rid of lower level workers?

GM is TOP heavy. Thick layers at the top!! Didn't see too many of those folks let go though. Not a big surprise there!

I think it depends on the area. I've met some DREs that are crank turners, particularly in groups that focus on a single larger component like a controller. I've also met DREs that are basically running the entire show writing the requirements, developing the validation plan, coordinating changes, and overseeing warranty investigation and continuous improvement. I think the company is moving to make all DRE positions this way, so you may see the shake up you've been describing.

The DREs in my area are overloaded to gills and are extremely knowledgeable. Must just be your space.
