Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

WTC Design Lay-offs?

I heard design layoffs were to be today but with the ice storm many people worked from home. Is it true the lay-offs are tomorrow? Any idea how many design staff will be affected?

Why does GM need so many design centers? They have design in USA, Brazil, China, Korea and Australia.

I am also surprised this is not getting more replies. When the designer lay-off happens today we should have a good idea what GM’s plans are going forward. Are they offshoring to low cost countries, just trimming some dead weight and keeping most stuff in house? We shall see. Cutting Designers always looks good on paper. But in reality these low cost locations are s failure. As a designer I was impressed when I came to GM, it Is a pretty good environment for designers compared to other places. I am worried that is about to change, I hope it doesn’t.

I'm going to get all liquored up before work, strip my clothes off and run around smacking everyone on the a-- saying 'No I'm the Commodore!'. That's how I'm going out.

Surprised this thread hasn’t gotten more replies. We shall see what happens the rest of the week I guess. Wish some mgt would post facts of the ensuing layoffs anonymously to us as a heads up.....
