Unemployment

So, we should not apply for unemployment benefits until our end date (2/28, etc). What about the severance pay? Do we file for benefits the week of 2/28 and simply claim the severance as income or not claim until after severance is done?

What is the website for unemployment in Michigan?

Can you please clarify. On the unemployment website it states:

"This application allows you to file a claim for unemployment benefits online. A claim cannot be filed early. Filing today means your claim will begin this week unless you request previous weeks. Benefits will not be allowed on an incomplete application."

Also it states "A claim for unemployment benefits usually begins the week that it is filed. Do you want your claim to begin 02/03/2019?"

But our official employment termination date will be February 28th. Can someone please clarify as to how you can file now and we are not officially terminated yet? I know it takes a while to process payments and this is why many above have advice to file for unemployment now. Thanks in advance.

Apply for unemployment now so everything is processed and ready to go...it takes a couple weeks for them to make sure you qualify...and then when 3/1 comes you can immediately start collecting. If you wait you’ll have no pay for 3 weeks at least but you’ll get back pay from the date you actually filed

Anyone actually read the severance package here? I heard from HR it was 60 days before severance since those affected were not notified in writing per the WARN Act.

I have not read it (yet).

When I apply for unemployment, it asked whether I am currently receiving benefits from the previous employment like severance..... I applied the day I left and I suggest you do it too.

I am not sure you have to wait. They are paying until 2/28 but you have no job.

Severance check will not be less, exact same pay. You need to file unemployment on March 4th. But then as you receive severance checks you will report that income and not get an any actual unemployment money, but once you stop receiving severance, you will report no income and then they will send a check. If you wait to file it will screw up your unemployment claim.

The key thing here is that Feb 28 is the last day of employment.
