Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

Volunteer to be laid off

I know this has been asked before in multiple threads but I would really like to volunteer for the layoff. It really breaks my heart to hear about the employees that have consistently exceeded expectations or that have kids and mortgages getting laid off. I'm a TRACK new college hire and would have a much easier time managing jobless for a while than someone else and wish I could take someone's place so that they don't feel so helpless.

I turned in my notice at GM (IT in VDOC) in January, volunteered to be laid off, no dice. I was leaving for a new job anyway, it would have been nice to get severance and Team GM, and saved someone's job, but my request was shot down. I walked with nothing. I am fine with that, but sorry my leaving didn't help anyone else.

If you were really worried about saving a job for someone else you wouldn’t be trying to qualify for the benefit on the back end. You would just quit. You either want to work for this company or you don’t.

I know of two people (one in my actual group) who were both not VSP eligible, did request for one back in December and they were both granted this week with full severance packages. While unofficial there are cases of this happening.

It's too late. Something that could have been done before and perhaps saved a job.

You could have volunteered but right after VSP was executed. You could have saved a job. Anyone saying you can't is a troll go away. I know cause a friend volunteered and was able to get the severance. He wanted to save someone's job and did want to go thru bankruptcy atmosphere again.

As has been said in all those other threads, you can't volunteer to be laid off and receive a severance package, but you can quit and receive nothing.

And your leaving won't prevent anyone else from being laid off. Those decisions have already been made.

That's just the way it is.

Same. Does anyone have any input for those interested in volunteering?

BTW, did not qualify for 12+ years of service.
